ratherastory: (Ahem)

This is the quick-and-dirty version of the intro-to [livejournal.com profile] ratherastory. Before I had a bunch of "sticky posts" on my LJ page, but by the end there were five of them and they were becoming a serious clutter issue.

In the interests of easier navigation, I am therefore putting the links to those posts all in this post AND in the sidebar of my LiveJournal (along with a bunch of other links you might find of interest, since you've made your way here already).

Title: If There Is A Flame, Don't Snuff It Out (Garden 'verse, Part 6)

Summary: Dean approaches Lisa with a problem.

Characters: Lisa Braeden, Dean Winchester

Rating: PG

Wordcount: 2,247

Warnings: None

Spoilers: None

Neurotic Author's Note #1: So, uh, hi folks! I'm still here. I told you I had plans for this 'verse, didn't I? So, here I am, continuing those plans. I have other stories to tell, and they'll likely end up out of order, just like in Fusion. This is the story that wanted to be told today. It's set a few years after The Kids Are Still Alright.

Neurotic Author's Note #2: It's my birthday! The universe rewarded me with crippling vertigo, but since I was almost done with this story, I figured a birthday fic would be a nice way to mark the day. Once this is posted, I'm going to turn over in bed (yay laptops!) and have a nap. :P

Neurotic Author's Note #3: You'll have to forgive how rough this is. It honestly feels like I've forgotten how to write in the past year and a half. I'm hoping that if I practice more, I'll get my mojo back properly. This isn't beta'd, either, because I don't want to chicken out before posting it. ;)

Guys, Wincon is in trouble! They need a little under $1,700 before midnight, EST, on January 4th, or else they'll be shutting down for good!

The good news is that their indiegogo campaign is offering some seriously awesome perks! Go check it out!

Okay, I tried to link with an embedded file and it totally failed, so above is just the plain link so you can go contribute!

Heck, if anyone is up for it, I can treat this like a fandom auction thing, and offer fic if you're inclined to support the con. This is NOT officially associated with Wincon, not in the slightest, but as of my ETA they are even closer to their goal, so I'm happy to offer extra unofficial incentive. It would be a prompt of your choosing, and, uh, say, 100 words for every $1 you contribute. So $1 gets to a drabble, $5-$10 gets you a ficlet, etc. PM or email me if that's something you'd be interested in, and we can work out details.

ratherastory: ([Rome] Ahem)
Hi friends!

Signal-boosting for a friend in Wisconsin (I hope I understood the location properly).

Anyone looking for a super friendly, well-trained 4-year-old medium-sized dog? I have been following Robo & his Mom on Twitter for what feels like forever, and he is a Good Dog™, though not great with other dogs (literally the only reason I can't drive over there and take him myself, since it means he and my dog Sergent wouldn't get along).

Please check out [personal profile] gabbysilang's post here, and if you can't take Robo in yourself, at least signal-boost so we can get this great doggie into a loving home.

Title: You're My Medicine (Open Up and Let Me In)
Summary: "Are you literally trying to heal me with your dick?"

"Um." Scott looks a little sheepish. "Maybe?"

Characters: Scott/Stiles
Wordcount 2,605
Rating: NC-17
Spoilers: Until the end of Season 3B, though nothing is explicitly stated.
Warnings: None. Just straight up vanilla sex and h/c.
Neurotic Author's Note: This is a very, very belated thing for ledtoleadlovers, who has been extremely patient and understanding with me for not being able to produce decent prose worth a damn lately. He asked for Scott taking care of Stiles, so naturally I thought that "healing cock" should be a thing.

Stiles is always cold these days. )

Title: And If I Show You My Dark Side (Will You Still Hold Me Tonight)
Summary: Dean will never let Sam go, and Sam knows it. This changes nothing, but it changes everything.
Characters: Sam/Dean
Rating: NC17
Wordcount: 2,982
Warnings: Consensual sibling incest. Spoilers up to the last aired episode of S9. Also, major trigger warnings: Major character death. Explicit depiction of suicide. Not the same character, either. Basically everybody dies. Sorry.
Neurotic Author’s Note #1: Well, on the plus side, I wrote something? I haven’t had much time or energy or inclination to write these days. Financial worries tend to kill the muse for me, and on top of that everything’s been busy and exhausting. Sorry.
Neurotic Author’s Note #2: On the not-so-plus side, I am really sorry for this story. No, really, I am sorry. Current canon is making me sad, and when I am sad I sometimes write really fucking depressing fic. Sorry. Also, this is not beta'd at all.
Neurotic Author’s Note #3: The title is taken from Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut from their album The Wall.

Dean is waiting in the motel room when Sam gets back. )
ratherastory: ([SPN] Writing Is Hard!)
Title: Call A Man Cold
Summary: Part of the After the End ‘verse. While Cas is away on a supply run, Sam has a seizure outside in the middle of winter. This was written for [livejournal.com profile] rainylemons’ prompt at the [livejournal.com profile] ohsam Sam-centric h/c challenge. She asked for hypothermia, so that’s what she got. Hypothermic!Sam, with a side order of Sam/Cas cuddling.
Characters: Sam/Castiel
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 3,151
Warnings: None.
Neurotic Author’s Note # 1: I’ve been meaning to get back to this ‘verse (along with pretty much all my other ‘verses), so it was nice to get a kick in the pants with this prompt. After the End was always meant to be about rebuilding and less about the apocalypse, and I’m glad I got a chance to start showing that here.
Neurotic Author’s Note # 2: Um, someone once said that my Cas is very mean in this ‘verse, and, well, I’m afraid nothing has changed. Cas is very, very broken, and he’s unlikely to get “fixed” and start writing sonnets for Sam. Sorry. (Only, I’m not really sorry. If I was really sorry, I’d write him nicer, wouldn’t I?)
Neurotic Author’s Note # 3: The title is taken from a quote by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: “Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.” I thought it was pretty apt, when it came to Cas.

Title: You Can't Break Away--And You Never Want To
Summary: Firefly crossover/fusion-type thing. Dean accompanies his brother to visit Sam's old friend Inara, with whom he underwent his Companion training.
Characters: Dean, Sam, Inara, Mal, Kaylee.
Rating: PG-13
wordcount: 1,332
Warnings: Unrequited (so far) Dean/Sam. Implied Dean/Kaylee, if you tilt your head the right way.
Neurotic Author's Note #1: So [livejournal.com profile] kinkthattwinked gave me a prompt that sort of got away with me at my last post on the topic. Oops? I actually had this plot bunny living at the back of my head, and someday it will become a real story. For the moment, this is just me playing with the characters and seeing if I can do it. I've never written Firefly, after all.
Neurotic Author's Note #2: This is unbeta'd, just written in a hurry and tossed out there in order to see what happens.
Neurotic Author's Note #3: The title is actually a quote from the episode "Heart of Gold," from Firefly.

I still don't think this is a good idea, Sammy. )
ratherastory: ([SPN] Writing Is Hard!)
You may have noticed (ahem) that I haven't been writing. This is due to many things, all of which can be summed up as Real Life Has Eaten [livejournal.com profile] ratherastory's Brain.

In bullet points:

- New job
- New schedule (a very fucking early schedule)
- Commute to a different city (2-3 hours one way)
- Toddler
- Family stuff
- Crappy/not enough sleep
- Various minor health issues
- Massive anxiety issues

The result is that, essentially, my brain is fried. I can't concentrate long enough to even read one chapter in a book these days, let alone write anything. If I'm lucky I can focus for the 40 minutes it takes to get me through an episode of TV, but even that is hit-and-miss. Sometimes I'll be watching something and realize close to the end of the episode that I stopped paying attention 15 minutes in and have no idea what's happening.

That being said, I miss writing. I even picked up a prompt for the fic challenge at [livejournal.com profile] ohsam to see if I could get the juices flowing again. I doubt it'll happen this month, what with the holidays and all, but I'm setting myself a goal for January, to start writing again.

In light of that, I'm going to write down a list of all the projects and ideas I have simmering in the back of my mind. Not that all of these will get written, but it'll be good for me to have all the possibilities laid out before me. The emphasis for me right now is to work on finishing stuff. If I want to be a "serious" writer, I need to not let myself get distracted by shiny new projects and instead work out structural problems in the stories and fix them, then finish my projects. For my original stuff, the focus will be on structure and outlining, which I am not good at, since I think that will really help me get it all written and finished.

Projects & stuff behind the cut! )

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Title: I See My Light Come Shining (From the West to the East)
Summary: With the Trials at an end, Dean thought that Sam would be fine and that they'd be able to turn the page on it all. As it turns out, he was wrong... Written for [livejournal.com profile] cleflink for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Show-levels of gore. Spoilers to the end of Season 8.
Neurotic Author's Note # 1: Oh my goodness, dear [personal profile] cleflink, I tried so hard not to have unrelenting angst in this, and, um… I'm not sure I entirely succeeded. I blame Season 8, and the show in general, because unrelenting angst seems to be a Thing™ lately. I hope you like it anyway! It was a really gratifying story to write, even if it was hard.
Neurotic Author's Note # 2: I would also like to thank the lovely betas who stepped up to rescue me from myself at the last minute: [livejournal.com profile] embroiderama, [livejournal.com profile] harrigan and [livejournal.com profile] moviegeek03. You are all marvelous and if I were there in person I would shower you with kisses! <3
Neurotic Author's Note # 3: The title is taken from Bob Dylan's song I Shall Be Released. It felt appropriate. :)
Neurotic Author's Note # 4: Yes, I know, I'm posting this really late after reveals. I am so swamped with RL that I've been neglecting all things fandom. Sorry!

ratherastory: ([SPN] Writing Is Hard!)
Title: A Different Strength
Summary: The panic attacks confirm that he's a terrible father, because he's almost relieved when they happen.
Characters: Sheriff Stilinski, Stiles Stilinski, Melissa McCall
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 1,886
Spoilers: Up to and including 3.11
Warnings: None
Neurotic Author's Note #1: Uh, so I guess I'm writing Teen Wolf now? IDK what happened.
Neurotic Author's Note #2: This is just me noodling around, trying to wrap my head around Papa Stilinski, for whom I have so much love, I can't even tell you. I'm not sure I got him quite right, but I'm working on it.
Neurotic Author's Note #3: I feel like I should apologize for the title. Titles are hard. :P

Title: Everything Is Transformed
Summary: Written for [livejournal.com profile] run_the_con, for the prompt "It's all gone tomorrow," by [livejournal.com profile] marieincolour. It's less than two days before Neal's final hearing, and he's feeling the stress of everything. He seeks comfort the only way he knows how, but El and Peter know exactly what he needs.
Characters: Neal/El/Peter
Rating: NC-17
Wordcount: 2,497
Warnings: fever sex (but the sex is totally consensual, it's not an incapacitating fever), threesome (does that need a warning? What the hell.)
Neurotic Author's Note #1: Okay, so, um, sex. I've never written porn for White Collar before, and somehow this turned into a threesome, which is not something I write often. IDK. I hope you like it?
Neurotic Author's Note #2: Canon? What canon? *makes Jedi mindtrick motions* This is not the canon you are looking for! There is no canon here! This is simple PWP.
Neurotic Author's Note #3: Title is taken from the quote by Lavoisier: "Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed." That's sort of the reasoning behind the story. Ish.
Neurotic Author's Note #4: Yeah, I still made Neal sick. I may have a problem. /o\

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who answered! I am seriously verklempt, folks. So many of you stepped up to rescue me from my own idiocy!

You rock. I hope you all know that. :D

Internets, I SUCK and have 9k of summergen due TONIGHT.

I KNOW. /o\

My usual long-suffering and heroic beta is understandably unable to help me due to the SUPER-quick turnaround on this.

I think the story itself is sound, so I just need someone to go over it to make sure I haven't grossly abused the English language anywhere in it, and to point it out if I have.

Is anyone willing to throw themselves on this grenade? Comments are screened.

Thank you!!!!
ratherastory: ([SPN] Writing Is Hard!)
Again, taking example from others and posting a list of fills so far...

For [livejournal.com profile] clarity159: The one in which Dean and Cas help Sam and Perry cope with an overenthusiastic Fourth of July display.

For [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis: The Fusion 'verse story in which they get Millie the cat.

For [livejournal.com profile] killabeez: The time Sam came to his big brother's defense when he was a teenager and some asshole was bad-mouthing him.

For [livejournal.com profile] azziria: The one in which Danny inexplicably craves licorice, because I misread the name in the prompt like a doofus...

For [livejournal.com profile] claudiapriscus: The one in which Phil Coulson is really glad that Pepper Potts has never decided to embrace a life of crime.

For [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver: The one in which the Winchesters meet the Hawaii Five-0 team and Sam is inexplicably intimidated by a man two feet shorter than him.

For [livejournal.com profile] ferrous_wheeler: The Fusion 'verse one in which Sam overhears Dean worrying about money and takes it personally.

For [livejournal.com profile] cherie_morte: The one in which they go to visit Bobby one summer and Sammy really wants to keep Bobby's dog, so Dean tries to think up elaborate ways to steal it (even though he thinks dogs suck).

For [livejournal.com profile] blackrabbit42: The one in which the boys spike a watermelon and spend a day with their feet in the river getting drunk on a rare day off.

For [livejournal.com profile] morganoconner: The one in which Sheriff Stilinski sees a werewolf for the first time.

For [livejournal.com profile] gidgetgal9: The Fusion 'verse story in which Sam accidentally drops a bunch of very expensive pills in the toilet and it ends up being okay anyway.
ratherastory: (Default)
Shamelessly stolen from [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis.

Tell me about a story I haven't written, and I will give you 1-3 sentences (or more) from or about it.

I haven't been writing much (apart from my summergen, which keeps getting longer on me and is giving me terrible trouble and I am worried my recipient will hate it and oh God... anyway), so this feels like a fun way to get back into the swing of things.

All my fandoms are fair game. That's Supernatural, H50, Leverage, White Collar, Avengers (and all related Marvel movies that I've seen), and if you know I watch a TV show but haven't written anything for it yet and feel like taking a chance, you should go for it. (Ones that spring to mind are Person of Interest and Teen Wolf, among others.)

Happy Canada Day, everyone!

ratherastory: ([Me] Fish Fear Me)
Hi fandom!

I'm not dead, just busy, as the subject line says. Girlfriend moved in with her toddler. It's been happy but stressful, with added misadventures just to keep us on our toes!

So, yeah. If I'm not around these days, that's why. RL craziness. Good craziness, but definitely craziness.

Hope everyone's doing okay. I owe a few people emails (especially the [livejournal.com profile] ohsam volunteers. Bear with me, they will be forthcoming shortly!

Take care!
