For a long time now he's been more distanced from people than Dean is. That's why it was so lovely seeing him do a little bonding with Sheriff Mills. Dean's done so much teaching himself to deny what he's feeling, to deflect and postpone, but Sam has gone another route and has taught himself just not to feel some things, pragmatically, because you can't change facts and the best you can do is fill the life you've got with whatever you have left.
