So my "anonymity" over here in fandom is officially at an end. After indoctrinating some new friends this weekend, it turns out that one of them knew another fan of SPN, who in turn apparently has read my fic.

And so now I have a RL friend who's a friend of this LJ.

Why IS it that it's easier to explain/justify porn than h/c? I don't get it.

Ha, funny you should say that, because all of my RL friends think that all I do here is read SPN porn (they don't know I write ANYTHING, let alone h/c).

I don't know why it's easier to explain/justify porn. I guess because enjoying sex is something everyone can understand, but thinking it's AWESOME when a fictional character has a broken leg or pneumonia (or hopefully both at the same time)? Not so much.

I guess I never really thought about it, because no one in RL knows I read or write anything. But yeah, being into hurting hot guys and then wrapping them up in blankets(or, you know, their brother) makes people think you're a little strange. Small world isn't it when someone you know knows someone else who's actually read your stories?

My mother knows I write fanfiction, but I have told her outright that she is NEVER going to read any of it, and I think she's secretly relieved. ;)

I think I'm helped by the fact that I've been doing this long enough to have lost most of my shame. One of my best friends actually was a huge help in working out structure and parallelism for a fic I worked on five years ago, because I wouldn't shut up about working it out. The Anonymous BFF, who frequently comments on my journal, actually asked to borrow SPN so she could figure out what the hell all my stories are about (though she also harasses me to work on original stuff). My immediate family all knows (and my older brother and I have spent years swapping fic ideas), and one of my aunts wanted to read my fic but refused to do it on the computer (she used to write Star Trek fic for mimeographed zines. She's hardcore).

Uncle Mike is fascinated by trends in social networking, and Uncle John (the other one I know has seen this thing) is a futurist with a deep fascination for the shifts in communication and popular culture, so I think they both are mostly just sort of academically interested in a vague way.

I don't tell people at work about it, though. Well, except that one guy. But, yeah, I do try to keep my professional life separate, anyway.

LOL! I told my best friend I wrote something, and was SO shy about it. She said, "Well, um, actually there's some Firefly fic out there with my name on it...."

I've thought about making a completely separate journal just for Supernatural fanfiction stuff, but it turns out that Storytellers can't keep secrets that well, so it doesn't really matter....

Why should you have to justify it at all. Eric Kripke, Sera Gamble and crew write h/c each and every week and we don't ask them to explain.. we just lap it up and ask for more.

The only thing that you do differently is that you sometimes add smex into the equation, and sometimes not. IT doesn't matter at all. If you get a kick out of kicking the puppy (Sam) and make it into a really awesome story... who am I to ask you to justify WHY you wrote it. I'm the one that just sat here and read it!

You know, that happened to me once. A friend and I were talking, and he mentioned something he'd said online, NOT saying where, and I realized he'd said it in a very specialized porn forum, for people who like sneezing.

And, like an idiot, I said, "I know where."

Like Wave_obscura put it, porn is normal. Everyone does it.

It may also have something to do with "fantasies about stuff you would hate if it actually happened," which is something that usually only women have.

I love your tag for this. It's so true. I guess the best thing about your situation is that that they've read it...which means there can't be any judging ;).

SPN is really my first and only fandom (though I guess I've haunted Jim Butcher's message boards for so long that I should probably count that). But I'm not coming out of the fic closet to anyone in RL. Just so much awkwardness there. It couldn't even be something acceptably geeky. Oh no. It had to be the cult show with the insane fandom obsessed with incest and the equivalent of torture porn. (That's its reputation, anyway, and seriously....not so far from the truth, I have to admit.) There's just no way to make it sound harmless. Except to get other people addicted, I suppose.
