Yeah, Dean has had a LOT of practice. Ten years' worth... I wanted that to be one of the main sources of tension in the story —why Sam didn't want to tell him everything, why Dean couldn't watch as someone else did that to his brother. It's a question of control, of having it, relinquishing it when necessary.
I'm not sure what happened to Sam, hence the really ambiguous last sentence. I'm pondering a sequel, but only when I've finished with some of the other fic I've committed to.
