[SPN Podfic] Not In Kansas Anymore

So by way of procrastinating on my Dean/Castiel Big Bang, I decided to do something nerve-wracking. I'm testing my boundaries, or having a mid-fandom crisis, I dunno. Anyway, back in the day when [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat wrote Not In Kansas Anymore I thought it would be really awesome if someone did a podfic of it. And then sometime last week she posted giving people blanket permission to podfic her stuff, and I decided it was a SIGN.

So, uh, this happened.

I think it's pretty good for a first attempt ever at podfic. I've been told by reliable sources that the French accent some people claim I have isn't audible, so yay! Unfortunately my recording program picks up on my computer fan, and there's nothing I can do about that, but otherwise I think it works.

I had to learn a ton about recording a bit on the fly, but it was fun.

I owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] elsewhere_kels who schooled me properly in the basics of podficcing: everything from which settings to use in my software all the way to podficcing etiquette, metadata, and how to differentiate between narration and dialogue without killing my vocal cords. She also discovered an accidental glitch in a previous recording, which I *really* hope is fixed now. I've listened to it so many times I'm kind of cross-eyed.

Also thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pkwench who also did a fair amount of hand-holding for me (you'll have noticed this is a recurring pattern).

:::ETA:::

[livejournal.com profile] elsewhere_kels made a PODBOOK for me! Because she is awesome!

You're unstoppable. :) I will have to check this out, even though I've never listened to podfic before.

*g*

I only started listening to podfic like, maybe a week ago.

I don't know, man. What this fandom DOES to me! *hands*

You are awesome! I have been listening for a year or so, and I haven't recorded my first one yet!

I'm going to download this and listen to it on my commute in the morning. My heart is filled with squee!

xx

*beams*

It was your fic, all the way. It lived at the back of my head forever after you posted it and bugged me to DO something about it, and then you posted that blanket permission post and... well, what's a fangirl to do? :D

I really hope you like it! *waffles*

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Help! I've fallen into fandom and can't get out!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
You say that as though I've even gotten to Step 1: admitting you have a problem.

"Dude, I can quit anytime I like!"

:D

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
We can! We can! I'm totally not doing this. It's just a phase! I'm dabbling!

College experimentation!

Welcome to the fray! This sounds interesting - looking forward to listening.

Also, I'm actually hoping I can hear your French accent! There is not enough of that language in my life anymore.

Podfic! Eeeee!

I downloaded and listened to, like, a minute of it, just out of curiosity. You've got a lovely reading voice! I'll listen to the whole thing later, when I'm not madly distracted by other things.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I am ridiculously excited and SO NERVOUS OMG I CAN'T EVEN. *flails in capslock for a while*

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
:D

Glad you like my voice so far! It goes a little hoarse by the end, alas. ;)

*wibbles anxiously about the whole process*

Dude, you recorded a whole, like, hour or more of reading. That's something like ten times the length I've managed on any podfic project. I think getting hoarse is allowed.

For that kind of enthusiasm for podficcing, I'll definitely have to remember to come back with comments once I've had a listen :P

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. God help me if I ever decide to try a longer fic. ;)

I will take more breaks next time, though. The fan noise is less discernible that way, and it'll give my voice a break too.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

Sorry, this is the way I am about everything fandom-related. I am an enthusiast, if nothing else. :D

Also? Comments are awesome. I love comments with much love, so I am always happy to receive them when they come my way.

[livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur advised on tea, then tea with honey, then tea with whiskey for long podfics. Also, breaks. And frozen peas under the fan to keep it from getting too loud. She did a podfic workshop at the last writercon.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I drank about a gallon of water. I have NO idea how coherent my reading would be if I involved whiskey. ;)

I think it's just a little bit right at the end. Apparently it's good for your throat.

I would definitely go with tea as well as water, next time. I remember it helping after spending hours telling stories at parties.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tea fixes everything! Why didn't I think of that? :D

[identity profile] twasadark.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yay!! Looking forward to listening!

Congrats on your first podfic!

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It doesn't mean anything.

Also, love your icon.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! And thank you for your advice on [livejournal.com profile] podfic_tips. :)

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That might be...interesting. It could be a whole challenge! Everyone would be assigned some fic, or some part of a longer fic, and they'd all have to do it after imbibing.

Bonus points if they start rewriting the story midway through.

Yay Dresden Files!

Everyone experiments in college, right?

(God, this is starting to sound like a J2 AU...)
