Belated Birthday Presents

There are times when I realize I am well and truly blessed in my friends. For six years now three of my friends and I who all have birthdays in late December and January get together to celebrate our birthdays. We do this by writing a radio play and then making our other friends perform it, because we're sadistic that way. Luckily, our friends enjoy our particular brand of sadism. ;)

This time around we made it a choose-your-own adventure format, because we thought it would be awesome, and it turned out beautifully. There was audience participation, filk, and by the end we were all laughing so hard we had tears pouring down our faces.

This year, there was an added bonus for me. My very good friend Lu presented me with a gift, and when I unwrapped it (driving her crazy in the process because I'm one of those people who has to unstick the scotch tape rather than tear the paper), there were two books inside:

In The Hunt: Unauthorized Essays on Supernatural

and

The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons, and Ghouls.

I love my friends. They are not only geeks of all kinds (writers, musicians, programmers, technical writers, librarians, anthropologists, archaeologists, knitters, spinners, artists, you name it), they ALSO totally and shamelessly enable me in my obsessions.

So when I admitted that I was massively obsessing about Supernatural, rather than just roll their eyes and just let me work through my phase, they jumped on board with glee and are now feeding my habit.

:D

Oh wow, that sounds like an awesome post birthday get together. Book of Monsters is a fun book, the author did a pretty good job getting Sam and Dean's voices right. The herb and oil index in the back is fairly acurate too (if you care about that kind of thing.) I hope you post your opinion of In The Hunt, I've been wondering if it's worth it.

Huh. I hadn't thought of that, but sure, I'll be happy to post reviews. :)

Well I'm not saying you have to do it of course. I'm just always intersted in knowing what fellow fans think of tie-in books before I buy. Too bad I didn't listen when people said the John Winchester Journal wasn't worth it. Could of saved myself a chunk of change. :-/

Oh, is it not good? Too bad, I was tempted.

Well, it's not that it's bad, it's just that it's a rehash of stuff that's already out there. Since you already have the Monster Book, a lot of the information is repeated in the Journal. I'd say it takes up about 1/3. Then a lot of the stuff at the begining is available free on the web at the Warner Bros. Supernatural site. (Or it was, I'm not sure if the site is still active.) Lastly some of the later entries about the boys have already been Kripked by events in After School Special and the season 5 opener.

So, yeah, I pretty much found the book not worth my time and money but YMMV.

What a great birthday tradition! My gaming group (of which we have major geeks, mostly computer programmers and writers) exchanges gifts and we make cake. One year, we made a cake that was a Dungeons and Dragons battle map with full combat scene in process. Another, we made a Rock Band drum set. They watch Supernatural and let me go on and on about the boys, but they still roll their eyes at me :)

Wow, that is SO cool! I wish I had mad baking skills like that!

My friends roll their eyes at me, but are very very patient when I witter on at length about SPN and just how awesome it is and "that reminds me of this bit in Supernatural when..."

Forbearance, thy name is friendship. ;)

I take it you play D&D?

[identity profile] primrose-1.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup! Every Saturday Night! Well, not ALWAYS D&D. Sometimes we play the Hero system, or White Wolf, or Call of Cthulhu, but you get the idea. It's my best friend that's good at the themed cakes. I'm good at cakes, but mine are more along the lines of a chocolate mint cake with drizzled white chocolate. They don't look like Rock Band drums.

Awesome. I should have known there'd be gamers in the Supernatural fandom, I don't know why it didn't occur to me before.

My work schedule doesn't allow for much gaming these days, and I miss it like anything. :)

Yayz! You have awesome friends! For my birthday my uber-cool buddies threw me a Supenatural/Zombie theme party! I love it when people are willing to feed the crazy habit! I do the same for them. Even if it included David Hasselhoff (long story).
