PSA: Yahoo! will likely be shutting down de.li.ci.ous

Okay, folks, it seems like it's official. After the last round of layoffs at Yahoo!, it appears that Yahoo! included the Delicious staff in the cuts.

So I haven't made as much use of Delicious as some of you, but I do have several dozen bookmarks there. So, uh, now would be the time for people to A) look into this to make sure it's legit (it looks like it, but I've been wrong before), and B) save your bookmarks elsewhere if needs be. :)

Oh, I hope it's not true. I already have about 200 bookmarks there and I've been using the site for less than two months...

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You CAN export your bookmarks into a file on your computer. Not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

Five best alternatives to delicious! I haven't started looking yet. I kind of wanna hear people's opinions on them.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Cool. I'll check them out at some point this weekend. Thanks!

Felicia Day was complaining about losing delicious on her twitter earlier today, so I'm going to guess it is true.

Holy crap! Thanks for the heads-up! That's been my main bookmarking tool, since I only use the 'net at work and have to move from computer to computer during in the day. I would hate to have lost all of 'em (650-ish bookmarks).

[identity profile] yggdrasilian.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
D:

Thanks for the head's up!

[identity profile] running-hot.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaah! Thank you for the heads up, I never would have noticed otherwise until they were already gone!

[identity profile] debbiel66.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Bummer! I don't have my own account but I mainly get ideas for recs from others. Is it a sure thing?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it looks like it. I think there are alternatives out there, though. Time will tell which one will win out over the others.

[identity profile] maypoles.livejournal.com 2010-12-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh, I was wondering what was up. The comm's delicious account hasn't worked right for MONTHS. It's sad; none of the other options look quite as good - for bookmarking fic, anyway. I think diigo is awesome, but in other ways.

Going to try to do an export now. O_o

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. My first reaction when I saw that was OH NO WHAT ABOUT ALL THE HOODIE-TIME BOOKMARKS!! /o\

Exporting isn't the best, but it's better than losing everything, right?

[identity profile] maypoles.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, awesome.

I don't really know anything about exporting. I did it awhile ago, but my links aren't showing up yet. I just can't decide if that's because I didn't do it right or because the other services are so overloaded right now with the mass exodus from delicious. ARGH.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Mine just exported as an html document that I could save to my HD, nothing especially fancy.

[identity profile] maypoles.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I did that part fine, but I don't think it's importing into diigo properly. We'll see!

I spent soooo long when I first started doing the bookmarks, going back and archiving everything, omg.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know! :(

If you need help temporarily, let me know. I can always try to help out in my spare time, just until you're all caught up again.

[identity profile] maypoles.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, thanks so much for the kind offer. You are a star! ♥

I may just take you up on that, but hopefully the import will work. I'm crossing my fingers!

[identity profile] nwspaprtaxis.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I heard good things about Google Bookmarks. It's not perfect but it's close...

And [livejournal.com profile] ratherastory, that was exactly my thoughts too...

[identity profile] maypoles.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, really? I'll have to look into it. I'm trying out diigo right now, but I don't knowww. It's just not the same, SIGH.

[identity profile] nwspaprtaxis.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't use Delicious or any other bookmarking tool so I can't vouch.

But when I was in library school *EVERYONE* was harping about Delicious. What would I totally give to sit in on a class and watch the chaos....

[identity profile] ariadnes-string.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
eek! am just hearing about this now....thanks, [livejournal.com profile] ratherastory for the headsup. For the stupid among us, how do you do an export from the site???
thx!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, uh, I only mostly figured it out myself. Basically if you go into your account settings you can click on an export link in there. :)

[identity profile] ariadnes-string.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
ah! thank you--I see it, and I've done it.

:( just when I was learning to love delicious!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I am so disappointed. :(

The Delicious blog posted an update: http://blog.delicious.com/blog/2010/12/whats-next-for-delicious.html

Is Delicious being shut down? And should I be worried about my data?

- No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive.

What is Yahoo! going to do with Delicious?

- We’re actively thinking about the future of Delicious and we believe there is a home outside the company that would make more sense for the service and our users. We’re in the process of exploring a variety of options and talking to companies right now. And we’ll share our plans with you as soon as we can.
