Authorial waffling —nothing to see here, carry on

Dear Gabriel,

Dude, you were meant to be a Cunning Plot Device™. In no way, shape or form was I inviting you to take up residence in my head and start nattering at me about your motivations. I'm not supposed to like you: I find your character on the show insufferable, and I want to smack him repeatedly until he leaves Sam and Dean alone.

Please to be getting out of my head before I actually start to warm to you. No, I mean it. Do NOT have a heart-to-heart with the Castiel who has already wormed his way in there (yes, he did it too, and now he's in there permanently and I actually like him now, dammit). I don't have room for you. Stop trying to be sympathetic, damn you!

Did you hear me? PLOT DEVICE. Nothing more.

*headdesk*

Yeah, didn't think so.

No love,

Me

Umm, flist? Does anyone know if in "Tall Tales" we ever find out the name of the janitor? I'm happy to invent a name for him if he doesn't have one, but Super-Wiki and IMdB are being unhelpful.

So, yeah. "Take Me Home" was supposed to be a quickie, light-hearted little crack!fic, and now it's getting a little out of hand. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 50K. Suddenly I have to think about characterization and motivations and PLOT, dagnabbit. Not to mention structure and underlying themes, and I'll be damned if the characters aren't all going and learning something from all of this.

*sigh*

Apparently I really AM incapable of just writing something silly and schmoopy.

Also, I blame [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique for my new-ish kink of having Dean using forearm crutches. What the hell?

FOREARM CRUTCHES? Where? Why? *whiplash*

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

I tossed Dean down a ravine in Chapter 9 of "Take Me Home." (Okay, technically it was another character, but I'm the author so I'm taking credit) Later on, there are forearm crutches involved. Can't get around on a broken leg otherwise, am I right?

I blame Roque. It's all her fault. I had no feelings one way or the other about forearm crutches before I read the Drive 'Verse.

:::ETA:::

Login fail. My apologies. :P

[identity profile] wave-obscura.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
YAY! *moves to top of To Do list* *suggestive leer*

At some point, after my WIP, after my challenge fics, after roque's first birthday fic is complete, I shall write some forearm crutches as well. Don't tell anyone this because it's embarrassing, but-- the first boy I had a crush on in first grade had forearm crutches and it's been a kink ever since. Pathetically true story!

I still also blame roque, though. I don't know why. Perhaps because she said "HEY WHY DON'T YOU WRITE FOREARM CRUTCHES?" To which I replied "HEY WHY DON'T I?"

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you: blaming Roque is the way to go.

Uh... you wrote forearm crutches? WHERE?!?

[identity profile] wave-obscura.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I haven't yet. I plan to... after everything else I've committed myself to writing.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. In that case, I'll wait.

*waits*

I understand about being committed to a million fics, though. Egads.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I know there are a lot of people who just love the antagonists that plague the protagonists in such a way that the protagonists just can't win against them in any shape or form, but it's so not me. I always end up sympathizing with the characters too much to like the tricksters and the bellas and all the rest. I always end up wanting to watch them get reduced to a greasy smear on the floor.

That said, while I haven't liked watching the trickster in the show torturing the boys and getting away with it, I find that I really, really, really like him in theory, off doing his own thing. He's kind of awesome.

That extremely length explanation is just my way of justifying this:

No! Don't kick him out of your brain! Let him run wild and awesome!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm right with you there: I need to believe that the characters do stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning, even if it's a really, REALLY slim chance.

That being said, I love the Trickster as a plot device, and now Gabriel has firmly taken up residence at the back of my head and is demanding to be three-dimensional.

I re-watched "Changing Channels" recently, for fic-writing purposes, and that look on Gabriel's face at the end... guh. It broke my heart. I'm talking Sam 'n' Dean levels of heartbreak, here. I have to attribute it to Richard Speight Jr.'s acting abilities that he managed to make me reconsider hating his character with one anguished look at the camera.

Okay, maybe I'm a bit of a sucker. ;)

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I agree. totally the acting.

I've been kind of bored with this season, though there have been some good performances. Because of that, I've been playing a little game of "imagine the spin-off." For example, I decided that Jesse did need to go live with bobby, and they'd become crimefighters of the: "one's a pint-sized anti-christ, the other's a good ol' boy demon-hunter. Together, they fight crime!" sort.

For the Trickster, I've decided he needs a single-camera sitcom ala "Scrubs." The fantasy sequences would be reality. It'd be fabulous. Perhaps Castiel could be the straightman.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk*

It would be awesome for the first few episodes at least. :D

I love your idea.

I was all on board with this season up to and including 5.04 (oh, GOD!), and enjoyed the rest in a way that wasn't the same single-minded obsession I had with the first four seasons. I'm still good to go for now. It's not brilliant, but it's solid. :)

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
We're of like mines on that. For the first few episodes- well. I was a happy little fangirl.

Since then? I must admit, I've been going through the motions. It's good, but not mindblowing awesome. And it's really, really, really hard to go from one to the other.

The one thing I am grateful for is that (so far) we haven't had the equivalent of "Heaven and Hell" which was like being on a bullet train of awesome that then crashed into a brick wall of suck.

Hm. I think I let that metaphor run a little too wild.

I think I too

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Metaphors are tricky things, aren't they? ;)

"Heaven and Hell" was a heck of a rollercoaster ride, I agree. There were parts which were awesome, and parts which were... not. :P

You didn't finish your last sentence. What do you think? :)

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think nothing! Actually, I think that little fragment of a sentence is the remnants of my copy-pasting from an email reply gone wrong into livejournal proper.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I am well-versed in copy/paste attempts gone awry.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
argh! Minds! (Must.Get.More.Sleep).

[identity profile] dante-s-hell.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lol! Sounds like there are some good stories (present and future) with Dean using forearm crutches. You really can't have too many of those.

Can't wait to read them all.

Oh, and hey, long stories are wonderful!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, you really can't have too many. *basks in the forearm-crutch stories*

And I love reading long fics. Writing them is a lot harder. :P

[identity profile] dante-s-hell.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I have one that was just supposed to be a one-shot sequel (Chris Pine/Zach Quinto) and it just keeps growing and growing....

I'm going to wait to read Take Me Home when it's finished. It'll give me something to look forward to.

Oh, and when the voices in your head get too loud? Just tell them to pipe down for a little while so you can get some sleep!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

I have lots of practice at dealing with the voices in my head. Usually I let them argue amongst themselves, which keeps them busy. :)

I hope that the wait turns out to be worth it.

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it amazing how the damned things start off as an idea with an actual end and then go from there? Longer and longer as more things occur to you. You just want to scream enough already! I haven't done anything close to as long as your fic is going to be, but even the short ones seem to turn into two or three parters. And I liked Gabriel in every epi he's been in so far. I still can't warm up to Castiel, but I have to write him into a fic I'm working on so I hope I can make him not too much of a dick. And forearm crutches? If they're what I'm thinking of, they're way hotter for Dean than regular crutches, or god forbid, a walker.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
They're the metallic ones with cuffs that clip around your forearms. Way sexier than regular crutches (and I cannot believe I just wrote that, I am clearly sick). Let's not even go the walker route. :P

My problem is that my ideas don't always have ends: I tend to find out what it is when I get there. Sometimes I'll write *toward* an end, when the last scene is in my mind (or sometimes even the concluding sentence), but then the rest of the fic is a surprise for me.

So, uh, my stuff always ends up longer than I originally envisioned.

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I wrote sexier instead of hotter at first and then I changed it. I can imagine a sort of open ended or beginninged in the event you already have the end scene planned, could go on for a while. Eek.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk*

And yes, it can go on for a while. Eesh.

[identity profile] elsewhere-kels.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
My god... This is AMAZING and a little unbelievable. XD

I'm so psyched!!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
This is All. Your. Fault.

Just so you know.

[identity profile] dinalori.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
First off, since I don't think anyone has answered your question yet- no, the janitor was never called by name and wasn't wearing a name tag on his uniform. So feel free to invent a name for him if you want.

*sigh* I'm undecided on how I feel about Gabriel (on the show, not your fic). When he was the Trickster I loved him! I mean really, he only went after people who deserved it (except for Sam & Dean), and not all of his victims died. The "alien probe" frat guy lived. But now he's just another whiney brat angel and... *shrug* I'm just not feeling it anymore. But I do agree that that last look he gave in CC was heartbreaking. So like I said, I'm undecided.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
He's growing on me, the brat.

I enjoyed him as the Trickster as a plot device. Then the angel thing was an interesting twist, which explained why they never managed to kill him, but I'm hoping they do something useful to make him not-a-carbon-copy-douchebag of the other angels.

[identity profile] clarity159.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
You weren't actually expecting sympathy were you? 'Cause if you think we're gonna complain about getting a nice long, lovely Dean!whump, Doggy!Sam brotherly story with a side of myth-arc stuff, you are quite mistaken. ;-) We is happy campers, we are. *shoos gently* Go on then, back to the writing and plotting and so on. :-)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I must say I wasn't really expecting sympathy. ;)

*goes back to writing*

[identity profile] primrose-1.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can't help but think that either way this is all to our benefit as readers. I can't help you with the janitor without watching the episode. I'm just not that good :( I MIGHT could pull it off later this week. The next two days are CRAZY!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I may re-watch the episode just because, but I have it on good authority that he's never named and doesn't even wear a name tag.

But thank you for the offer!
