Okay, I feel better now
All righty. So after flailing like a flaily thing yesterday, I did what all writers do: sat my ass down in my chair (well, on my sofa, really), put my fingers on the computer keys, and wrote. And lo and behold, I am panicking a little less now.
10030 / 20000 words. 50% done!
So, wordcount-wise, I'm okay. I can make the limit no problem. The "real" problem is whether or not I'll be able to tell my whole story in time. Right now at the rate I'm going, this thing is going to be, umm, let's just say longer than 20,000 words. I have no idea how much longer. I have this first part of the story quite solidly in my head. I know how it's supposed to unfold, almost up until the end, but not quite how the end works. The rest of the story, up until the real end (and not the end of the first part) is still pretty fluid.
If I really knuckle down, I think I might be able to hit 15K by tonight, which would be awesome, but if I knock out another 2,000 I'll be happy with that, too. Right now I have to make dinner, and after that I'm going to sit myself back down at the computer and let my fingers do the walking.
In short, there is now less flailing and screaming and panicking going on in my head. Sure, it's a rough draft that's going to need a LOT of fixing, but it's a draft and not a blank page, and that's something.
Whew.

You can always do it all as two stories, the first for big bang and the other a sequel?
