5.15 —I am so excited about the premise but it's a spoiler, so...

ZOMBIES! THERE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ZOMBIES TONIGHT HOLY CRAP!

It's difficult for me to express my undying love for zombies (pun totally intended) properly, but let's just say they are my favourite type of monster ever, bar none. I could go on and on and on about them, but that's not the point of this post.

LET THE CAPSLOCKING BEGIN, APPARENTLY.

Ooh, nice nod to Romero there, and the classic fist-punching up through the ground.

Okay, the tried-and-true trope of having the TV-in-the-TV narrate what's going on in a meta fashion. Cute, and SPN still knows how to do a fantastic suspenseful teaser.

"Who died and made you queen?" Hee! You go, Digger. Don't let the man tell you you can't make up your own nickname.

*dies*

THE SHERIFF KNOWS BOBBY!

*dies more*

Bobby cleaned his house. If I didn't already know what this episode was sort of about, I'd know something was up just because of that. Also, where's his ball cap?

Soccer!Dad!Zombie!

"I'm a taxpayer!"

Aaaaand the boys are in jail. Again.

UNDEAD!WIFE! GAH!

This can't end well.

CREMATED?!?!? HOLY SHIT!!!!

Horseman.

Oh, Dean, SNAP! "Another horseman. Must be Thursday."

Oh, Bobby.

*cries*

Dean leaning against the Impala is always bad-ass.

Aww, wifey is bringing him in for pie!

Lots of pie. Holy crap, PIES EVERYWHERE! I note that Dean is not averse to eating the enemy's pie, that being said.

She's giving him the standard I-love-Bobby-and-want-him-safe-just-like-you spiel. "I am not the enemy." Oh, this cannot possibly end well.

Sneaky!Sam

"I'm gonna regret this." Yes, yes Sammy, you are.

RABID!ZOMBIE! Who didn't see that coming? *looks around* *crickets*

YESSSSS! HEADSHOTS! FINALLY!

I wonder if the really gross viscous zombie spit is significant. Certainly there was a lot of it.

Fast zombies. Boo. Everyone knows those aren't real zombies. *scoffs*

I keep wondering about the sheriff's son. I can't help but feel that there is potential heartbreak there. Also, fodder for an outsider POV ficlet, if Show glosses over that.

Oh, Bobby. What is it with you and herding Winchesters off your property at gunpoint?

Yeah, Dean. That seems fair. You save Bobby, Sam saves... everyone else. I guess Bobby IS worth an entire town full of NPCs...

Okay, well, I guess the Sheriff's on board now. GAH!

Oh, JESUS CHRIST CRAP OH MY GOD, SAM! THE LITTLE BOY! Urgh. That is almost as horrible as the empty bloodstained baby seat in "Croatoan."

WHAT WAS THE MESSAGE, WOMAN, SPILL! AAAAH! Speaking of "Croatoan," I guess we

How on Earth did Bobby suddenly develop a bad rep in town? Town drunk? That totally doesn't jive with the whole hunters-keep-a-low-profile, thing. Unless it's a reference to the "drunk and disorderly" stuff the Sheriff mentioned, which I guess might come as a result of local hunts.

Oh, Bobby.

SCRAPYARD ZOMBIE HUNT! Come on, the best place to fight zombies is in a scrap yard, everyone knows that!

They really DO need bungee cords!

HOLY CRAP ZOMBIES! I thought there were only 20 or so? Where the hell did they all come from and why are they ALL coming for Bobby's place?

Huh. Apparently Dean wants to know that too.

Bobby knows! Must be the message his wife gave him.

LOCKPICKING ZOMBIES! Awesome!

"Don't you ever get tired of being wrong?" Haha, Bobby!

BADASS!SAM to the rescue! Woah, Sam. That is a LOT of carnage. I was actually a bit worried about Bobby's fate there for a moment.

Blood spatter on the camera lens, FTW!

Woah, giant bonfire!

Apparently Karen gets her own private bonfire.

Sam, stop asking people if they're okay.

Erf. Well, the message isn't unexpected. Everybody around the Winchesters gets to suffer until they say "Yes."

SAM, SERIOUSLY, HONEY. I KNOW YOU MEAN WELL, BUT QUIT ASKING BOBBY IF HE'S GOING TO BE OKAY. FOR ONE, HE'S NOT, AND FOR TWO, YOU NEED TO STOP RELYING ON OTHER PEOPLE TO BE STRONG FOR YOU.

UNF.

My heart, she is broken. Goddamn, this show is putting me through the wringer. God.

(On an only slightly related note: Thank goodness for all the episode codas and tags after last time, because I am feeling seriously gypped by the lack of detoxing!Sam and the proper reconciliation that should be taking place between the boys.)

Hope my html blunder didn't wreck your suspense for the upcoming show...

Zombies -- about bloody time.

That's all I got.

[identity profile] nwhepcat.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I kept wondering how hard this ep was for Jim Beaver to do. He gave a beautiful, understated performance, but it had to ping so many bad memories.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Did it? I have next to no idea about any of the actors' personal lives, so I wouldn't know...

[identity profile] peppervl.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
The book he's written? Emails he sent while his wife was dying of cancer.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, crap.

Man... poor guy. :(

[identity profile] nwhepcat.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
He lost his wife to cancer, I think in 2004. Wrote a book about it, "Life's That Way." And has fairly recently written some lovely things about her on her birthday, and upon finding some recordings of songs that she'd written that he'd never heard.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
God, how awful for him. I hope filming the episode wasn't too terrible... :(

[identity profile] ink-maid.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
BRB TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO BREATHE AGAIN. THIS WAS AN INSANE (AND ANGRY MAKING) EPISODE.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I had to hug my cats VERY hard.

It was up-and-down, the way many episodes have been this season.

[identity profile] ink-maid.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
As long as none of their heads popped off or ribs broke!

Agreed. I'm sooo damn excited for next weeks ep now though.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they're all still intact.

They're upset that I'm not petting them anymore now. ;)

I'm excited too, although what little I've been able to glean about next week's episode has me... a bit anxious. Not as anxious as some of the other episodes to come, but still...

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

I love that! There's an icon floating around somewhere that says "Sam's tied up. Must be Thursday." I wish I could find it again.

[identity profile] melanth0.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
ZOMBIES!

CARNAGE!

DOCUMENTARY NARRATIVE!

all things to love.

...I confess, I was hoping for a slightly more earth-shattering revelation from Death's message than "Hey, Singer, stop helping the Winchesters." It's just...I mean, duh.

However, I really enjoyed the scene with Bobby's wife, Dean, and the rows of pies. (totally expected it to be drugged, though.)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, it's Show. They don't really do subtle, much as I love 'em to bits.

They're more the sledgehammer version of horror. ;)

I was waiting for something to go wrong with the pie too...

[identity profile] peppervl.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
In all fairness to the lack of detoxing/reconciliation, this was originally supposed to be 5.14, and then MBV was supposed to be 5.15. They were even filmed in that order. But then they flipped them because they wanted MBV to air near V-Day. (Note how at the beginning of this they seem to have not already been in town, whereas they clearly would have been otherwise).

Also, remember how Show likes to leave ends dangling and then tie them up several episodes later. So. Have faith. :P

On a side note, I laughed SOOOOO hard at "must be Thursday."

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
They flipped them just for that? Boo, Show. Bad form.

Because this would have made WAY more sense as 5.14.

I am keeping the faith. I'm hoping for my reconciliation before the end of the season.

I laughed really hard at "Must be Thursday" as well.

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
The part where the zombies broke into Bobby's house and attacked him and Dean had me absolutely on the edge of my seat. Poor Bobby! And Awesome Sam to the rescue! I so felt for the poor sheriff, but really she should have listened to the boys in the first place. I'm glad Bobby's wife knew what was happening, but damn. Bobby having to kill her twice? Brutal.
"Dean leaning against the Impala is always bad-ass." My second favorite part of the epi after the zombie invasion at Bobby's. All in all, I liked it, but it didn't knock me out with greatness.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
No, it didn't knock me out either.

I am willing to forgive a LOT for the presence of honest-to-God, quasi-Romero-esque zombies, though. \o/

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
As I suspected from the synopsis, it's like the writers noticed they'd only given Bobby a human-sized helping of angst and realized they had to remedy that.

Though I did like the hints they gave to Bobby as someone who was part of a community.

Though I'm kind of bummed they are hinting at him you know, I don't know, being turned against them. (Or at least, at the possibility). At this stage in the game, I just can't really buy it.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Which is not to say that I didn't like the episode. Just kind of a random thought.
Along with, when the zombies were besieging the house "Gosh, if only you had built a room, just for this sort of occasion" :-p

Also, I am sorely disappointed in Bobby, if he could load up all of his ammunition (and other weapons?) into the car.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know!

I forgot to write it at the time because things were going so fast, but I kept thinking: "Umm, Bobby? You know your detox chamber? You first designed it as a panic room!" :P

I doubt he could load everything into the car. They probably just took a fraction of his stuff.

My friend is a hunter (the regular kind, obviously), and not a very dedicated one, and even he wouldn't be able to load all his gear into one car.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what I was thinking, but since apparently he didn't have any more left in the house....

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's all in the panic room they forgot about. ;)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked the idea of Bobby as part of a community, but I had trouble reconciling the "town drunk" image they suddenly came up with.

How could he have a reasonably successful salvage business if none of the locals respect him?

It's not entirely implausible, it was just done a bit clumsily.

I'm kind of bummed that they're hinting he might turn against them, or at the very least opt to sit out the rest of the apocalypse. Bobby just doesn't seem the type to let himself get manipulated that way. He'd just get more pissed off and dig in his heels.

Then again, his wife might just be the straw to break the camel's back. Who knows?

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. He always did strike me as a stubborn bastard. That's what I like about him.

Since the only time we've really seen evidence of drinking was in 4x01, maybe he got that reputation over that summer. Perhaps he really, really, really missed Dean?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. But is one summer enough to undo a 40-year reputation? *shrug*

I dunno. I'm willing to buy it, but I wish they'd handled it a bit better.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone, somewhere, perhaps even here it's too early for me to really remember, suggested it was meant as a product of hunting, not actually drinking. Like, up to that point, the townsfolk would interpret Bobby doing odd things or getting beat to hell or something on drinking.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. That was me, trying to conjecture *why* Bobby would suddenly be the "town drunk." It was the only explanation that made sense to me.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I suspected so. First thing in the morning isn't pretty for me. Someone wrote a backstory fic for Bobby I really liked. It had him as a post-doc in...well, I can't quite remember, but it dealt with ancient beliefs and practices. It was pretty well written, and it made a lot of sense.Unless the show forces me to abandon it, that's what I'm sticking with.

Also: I've always loved that quotation from the Dresden Files.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Dresden Files has awesome quotes. :)

I like that idea about Bobby, but part of me also likes the idea of him being entirely self-educated. Last night's episode makes a good case for that, since Karen married a salvage guy, according to her.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, for sure. It wasn't the idea I was so attached to; it was the way the fic was realized. It stuck in my head.

Crud. Thinking about it made me want to find a way to stick Bobby in my crossover big bang, because there could be awesome interactions with a character who followed a similar path.

On the Dresden Files- have you been reading the preview chapters?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No! There are preview chapters?

Oh God, oh God. Preview chapters make me INSANE because I want to read the rest NOW.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only are there preview chapters, there's a chance to win an ARC (through twitter and here on LJ), though I don't remember exactly where they are on the website.

I hadn't read the synopsis or anything until I noticed there were preview chapters. As a result, my reaction was quite on par with Harry's.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not following, but okay.

What's an ARC?

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
advance reader copy. It's like when they screen movies or TV shows early for critics, but for books. They send them out to bookstores and things to try and get them to order them.

[identity profile] hansons-angel.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
*Loved*

(Disclaimer: But I have found very little to complain about this season anyway. And I've decided to stop lurking at TWoP because I hate those bizzaches who say every episode is boring and they hate angst).

I agree with just about everything you said.

Loved Bobby (Jim, you rock and your wife would be proud -- is shining down on you even now).

Oh, man -- Sam -- he looked so worn still. Subdued. And that's just how it should be, given what he's just come off of. And, oh man, my fucking twisted mind when that Jones zombie-thing was hacking away and wanted him to come close and he didn't want to, and then she spewed that shit aon hsi face -- I was all, "oh, God, please, if you could somehow get him sick I would worship you forever," -- lol, I just want some sick!Boys so bad. . .

I did feel gipped (gypped -- SP?) that we got so little of Sam and Dean's post-detox, given how broken both of them were in MBV -- but I almost expected it to be left unaddressed, just like Dean's post-Hell issues. I guess that's what fan fic is for (*sigh*).

Oh, and Dean. What can be said? He's always there, always on, always brings his A game. Damn you Jensen, for killing me with your awesomeness.

Not that Jared doesn't. He does. But sometimes, Sam's actions are ones I have to give more thought to. Which is a good thing.

I need to stop here and go reread your post. Because the first time through was squee-worthy but then I had to come here and spill my initial thoughts and now I have to go and think some more on tonight's greatness (and I DO think it was great, but I am probably the easiest person on the planet to please as far as SN goes). : )

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty easy to please too! I had a lot of fun during the episode, as you may have seen.

I always have to give more thought to Sam's actions, and while it's not necessarily a bad thing, I keep waiting for those character-centered episodes about Sam that they've been giving us about Dean the whole time.

I still need to write that Sam-is-a-plot-device meta that's floating around in the back of my head.

I did feel gipped (gypped -- SP?) that we got so little of Sam and Dean's post-detox, given how broken both of them were in MBV -- but I almost expected it to be left unaddressed, just like Dean's post-Hell issues. I guess that's what fan fic is for (*sigh*).

Yes, this.

Still waiting for Kripke to fix what he broke, too. :(

[identity profile] crackedeggie.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
ALL OF THE BOBBY PARTS JUST MADE ME INCREDIBLY SAD. :(
HE NEEDED A HUG BAD.

*TEAR*

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it.

*hugs Bobby forever*

[identity profile] 27-jaredjensen.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
Okay I seriously agree, I thought that the rabid zombie spit was going to be more significant too... maybe it was hoping.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it was. It was just so very gross and there was so much of it, that I kind of thought they'd do something with it.

Guess not. Oh well.
