Day 23 & 24: 30 Days of Supernatural

I skipped yesterday accidentally between work, re-vamping my master list, and posting podfic. Oops.

Day 23 - The character that is most like you

Actually, there aren't really any characters in SPN who are like me. I share some personality traits with the main characters, and with a few of the secondary characters, but nothing to write home about.

Here's who I'm aspiring to be (minus the murder part):

Except, of course, I'd be a Mountie. :)

Day 24 - An episode you wish never happened

That's a weird question. There are plenty of episodes that I found almost too painful to watch, but those are usually the best ones, so I can't wish they'd never happened.

There are some filler episodes I think they could easily have done away with, especially in Season 5. "Fallen Idols," "Sam, Interrupted," "Swap Meat," among others. They added nothing to the overall plot, and as stand-alone MoTW episodes they were actually quite weak, by comparison to previous seasons.

I would agree with you on Fallen Idols, because there were parts of it that were just *awful*. My feeling on the other two is that at least they were forgettable (I'm not sure why Fallen Idols isn't), so they're unlikely to continue to bug me.

My choice would be something like heaven & hell, because not only did I really hate it, I couldn't just forget the stupidity because it was a big lynch pin episode so stuff from it had to be constantly referenced. (It's the reason I had problems with Anna every time she showed up- it wasn't anything against the character per se, it was just that she forced me to remember the grace tree and the whole "we didn't have emotions or the capacity to make choices, and that made me sad so I decided to fall."

Oh, God. There's so much about that episode I don't like. I blame that episode for the fact that I have never liked Anna, and I really really wanted to.

"we didn't have emotions or the capacity to make choices, and that made me sad so I decided to fall."

*sporfle*

YES! THIS! *dies laughing*

In short, I wanted that episode to be so much better than it really was. Maybe one day I'll re-write the whole "fallen angel" thing to my satisfaction.

you should! What else is fic for?

The other thing I can't forgive that episode for has to do with the fact that I only started watching in season 4, and man, what a place to start watching. Season 4 wasn't perfect, but it was just rocking everything, especially early on. I had such faith in the writers...up until that episode. Everything after it was a bit tarnished, because ever after, I couldn't be sure if some brilliant thing was intentional or accidental, and I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop- for them to take something cool and somehow manage to make it suck.

Aww, that's too bad. I blitzed through Season 4 on DVD, and while I didn't like the episode, because I had everything right at my fingertips, I got carried through on sheer momentum and thus enjoyed the season a lot.

I think that, quite possibly, I'd have been more forgiving of Season 5 if I didn't have so much time to think about each individual episode as they aired.

You're probably right. I have a friend that watched it all at once, and he was far more positive about this last season that I was. (By which I mean, he was like "yeah, that was good," and I'm *still* kind of disappointed.)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I really think that has a lot to do with it. So much about Season 4 was good, that in my mind it overrode the weaker elements.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. I still love it to death. I'm struggling a bit with Season 5 though. My usual tactic of just...forgetting about it isn't working, because the problems I had with it are so deeply entrenched I'd have to write the whole season off- except there were things I really enjoyed and it's kind of hard to write a whole season off and keep watching. I mean, you'll constantly be reminded of what happened previously.

I'm mostly having success with filtering out the bits I didn't like and only keeping the good bits in my head. I also have a lot of talent for re-thinking plots in my head until I like them, too. Denial is your friend!

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Deny! Deny! Deny!

What I really need to do is find some AU fic for the season that starts in the same place, and ends in the same place-ish as the show, but finds someway to connect the dots without causing me to headdesk. And then I can just substitute that for canon.

I'm not against any particular plot point necessarily. I just want it to make sense. I can't make sense of the last season- and by that I mean, I can't see how all the individual elements were related to each other and added up to the end result. And I know mileage varies on that, so I don't mean it as a condemnation of the show. I just need the pieces to fit together in my own mind.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Overall, I think the show fits if you *remove* some elements, rather than adding any.

Much as I liked the antichrist, for instance, he was totally irrelevant to the plot.

Yeah- What was up with that? How very random it was. (I'm still kind of wishing the kid HAD gone off to bobby's. Together, they could Fight Crime! and demons! But also crime.)

I know! It would be awesome. But they tossed him in there and yanked him out just as fast, and we never heard about him ever again. :P
