Day 28: 30 Days of Supernatural

Day 28 - Your favourite season finale

Hands-down, season 1. That cliffhanger, OMG! The first time I saw it I gasped and almost jumped out of my seat! It's right in the middle of Sam's sentence, too, which makes it feel really immediate and visceral and unexpected. With CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" wafting tinnily from the car speakers as they're all lying there, unconscious and/or dying?

GAH.

So yeah.

I liked the other finales too, don't get me wrong. But this one? Scarred me for life.

I wouldn't be able to answer this question. I hate the season finales. Not because they're necessarily bad, just because everything *always* gets worse- though tbh, by now it kind of beggars the mind to think about they could top it anymore. But that's the nature of the show- i knew what I was getting into. But I really like happy endings, and I can't keep myself from rooting for the heroes to win and I can generally delude myself all season that this time, it'll end with sunshine and rainbows.

I'm happier not watching the season finales.

I hear you.

I hate cliffhangers, and SPN is terrible for that. They also usually end on the worst note possible, with maybe the exception of Season 2, which ended on a mostly positive note. Oh, except for the fact that Dean's going to hell. :P

But this next season, it's going to be sunshine and rainbows, I can feel it. For sure.

Oddly enough, "All Hell Breaks Loose" (both parts) was the first I saw of the show. I was in the UK, working on something....probably not an essay, my guess is that it was some Greek homework. And I remember watching it and rolling my eyes and thinking "I bet this is a WB show. How ridiculously over-angst-y. Oh, and what kind of cheap death was that? Making a deal with a devil, bright idea, but yeah right they're sending a main character to hell. Whatever." And then I idly wondered how they were going to get him out of it, and thought no more about the show until awhile later when I was tempted into checking out Season 4 by a combination of a few tantalizing articles on tvtropes and shockingly positive recaps on TWoP.

LOL

And THEN SPN sucked you in. Muahahaa! :D

I KNOW! I totally shouldn't be watching this show. I should hate it. I have an *extremely* low tolerance for angst. A certain degree of tragedy? great! Horror? sure thing! Black and/or surreal comedy? sign me up!

And therein lies the problem. Everything else about this show is like crack to me, but a giant component of it I loathe. This makes me very conflicted fangirl.

See, I'm okay with angst as long as it's superhero-style angst along the lines of "The life I lead puts the people I love in danger, but I have to do it in order to help humanity!"

Ordinary angst, Dawson's Creek-style, makes me change the channel as quickly as I can grab the remote.

And the rest of the show is like crack. :D

My tolerance for even extraordinary angst (which was higher than the normal sort) has gone through the floor, too. I think I'll blame the superhero resurgence as much as the vampire/werewolves/etc one. I loved that stuff when I was younger, all the precious fragile woobies....now though, I'd much rather watch ass-kicking. With maybe some crushing tragedy, if necessary.

I just am tired of moping, I suppose. Perhaps this is why I liked "The End" so much. It managed to hit supernatural's required levels of depressing, without actually people sitting around and crying into their beers about it ;)

Hell to the yes!

I wanted there to be MORE of that. Heroes killing zombies, and the angst in the background.

Action and ass-kicking, and crushing tragedy, but I'm okay with them scaling back the angst a bit.

Damn straight.More stuff like End-Dean shooting that one guy in the head. Brutal and sad and *active*, but also very depressing. We all knew what it meant. I sometimes think they don't give the audience enough credit, that perhaps the reason there is so much angst is the fear that maybe we won't understand that something is tragically significant.

And there you have nailed down the problem with most modern television and movies.

"Dear audience: clearly you are too stupid to infer what we are trying to say, so allow us to club you over the head with our Subtle Plot Points™ And Characterization."

My sister and I were literally stunned speechless when we saw this. I think of all the finales, this was definitely the most shocking. It just comes out of NOWHERE.

SO FUCKING TRUE. I know I jumped so badly the first time I saw it - and then as the credits rolled, I screamed. And fell to the floor. And couldn't get up, I was sobbing incoherently, "They need immediate medical attention! I need to see them get it!" But I had to wait at least 24 hours before we picked up S2 from the library.

It's so strange because so many worse things happen in the rest of the season finales...but yeah, this one's still the most affecting in some ways.
