Weirder and weirder

So, in a fit of madness, I've decided to take an AU prompt for one of my exchanges. I know, I know, I never write AU, and the worst part is that I know NOTHING about the kind of AU my prompter wants, and yet it piqued my interest and I WANT IT.

*headdesk*

So, here I am, researching scurvy. For a fic. SCURVY.

IDEK, okay? I might not even be able to pull this off, but I aim to try.

Damn you, fandom, I used to be normal!

Ras, Scurvy is a vitamin C defiency.
It was experienced by British sailors at one time until they started carrying limes as cargo or food supplies on their ships. They found out eating the limes kept them from getting scurvy on long trips at sea. That's why we call the Brits "Limeys".

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I know what it is, but thanks! What I was researching was specific symptoms of advanced cases of scurvy: what it would look like, the progression of the disease, how long it would take someone to die from it, etc.

[identity profile] heartlessbytchh.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, I can't wait to see what you come up on this. Sounds interesting.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm excited! I hope I can do it justice...

[identity profile] nwspaprtaxis.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE YOU!!!! I thought I loved you before but Winchesters Plus Scurvy makes me squeal like you wouldn't believe. And I pretty much second everyone on here... Also, if you ever need help on research at any time, PM me! This is my favorite kind of "research" -- finding out weird medical facts online. I don't always inflict my discoveries on the guys, but I do that in my spare time. *groans* Anyways, if you need research-fu, let me know because I have a MSLIS languishing here...

I'm currently getting my ass beaten down between work and school, but I am off Friday and can whip out the med library of doom to look up anything you like. I'll try to be on later tonight if I can get my SIM shit done. Apparently, the workload on that one is terrifying. Ack. (And I aim to nap too for I am tired. LOL)

I am dying to know what this prompt is now :D

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell you in public because it's an exchange, but I can PM you if you want. :)

I love your icon! It sums up my feelings precisely.

[identity profile] icelily01.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yesss PM!

And thanks, it's my new favorite as well :D

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
PM has been sent! Have fun! :)

[identity profile] ariadnes-string.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, scurvy is an awesome thing* (both as a disease and as a historical phenomenon)--how could you have resisted this prompt?

*awesome as in interesting, not as in fun, that is!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Scurvy wasn't in the prompt per se, but the prompt inevitably led me to think of scurvy and how I could inflict it on the characters over the course of the story. Because I'm twisted that way.

[identity profile] hsifeng.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
*giggle*

You are the H/C Princess!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
*prances around in a tiara*

So who's the queen?

Do I get to be a fairy princess? Also, I'd like a unicorn, please.

[identity profile] hsifeng.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
If you are a benevolent Princess, then we all get unicorns.

*makes unicorn eyes at you...*

Wouldn't the Queen be your mom? I wouldn't want to ask such impertinent questions....*giggle*

[identity profile] rainylemons.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Do I get to be a fairy princess?
Fight those fairies! Or something. HEEEEEHE.

[identity profile] nwspaprtaxis.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
HECK YES scurvy is an awesome thing* (both as a disease and as a historical phenomenon)--how could you have resisted this prompt? Basically I saw "Scurvy" and my brain went "OH WICKED AWESOME!!!"

[identity profile] elsewhere-kels.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Scurvy.

Ahahahaha, ILU. XD

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
*headdesk*

I'm doomed.

You're totally writing a pirate fic, aren't you? Pirates!
bellatemple: (Cat and Girl - Scurvy)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-11-15 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
*looks at scurvy icon*

Well, they could be hip indie twee boys, too.

Also, I'm kinda just realizing the fact that I totally have a scurvy icon. Who does that?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
Who does that?

People who are awesome? :D
bellatemple: (Cat and Girl - Otters)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-11-15 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Or who read Cat and Girl, I suppose.

One of these days, I'll make myself an icon that says "and sometimes, what you think is a beautiful dream is a bear."

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
True. I don't read it, but I still love your icon. :)
bellatemple: (Cat and Girl - New Wave)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-11-15 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
You should totally read it. It edges out "Hark a Vagrant" for my favoritest web comic around.

It's got it all, man, poetry jokes, goth pirates, and Bad Decision Dinosaur!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I will check it out. I kind of stopped reading webcomics when I got into fandom. I might try to get back into it. :)
bellatemple: (Cat and Girl - dead language)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-11-15 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have an RSS feed that shows up on my flist. It's like, surprise! Have a Cat and Girl comic! Which is the only reason I ever remember to read any of the comics I still follow. . . .

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
LOL

I hear you. RSS feeds of webcomics tend to break my LJ, though, so I avoid them.

You have a LOT of Cat and Girl icons...
bellatemple: (Cat and Girl - context vacation)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-11-15 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's just that awesome.

Though this is the last of them.

On this account.

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THAT. OMG I LOVE PIRATES.

It shows you what kind of dork I am that I heard "scurvy" and thought OMG MOBY DICK AU!
bellatemple: (Default)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-11-15 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahaha, the best kind of dork!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
In your defense, it's not like I haven't shamelessly used Moby Dick in my fic before... ;)

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I TOTALLY HAD A FRIEND IN COLLEGE WHO GOT SCURVY. TWO FRIENDS, ACTUALLY.

This in no way makes me qualified to advise on it, but I couldn't resist!

The fic sounds awesome, I hope there are pirates. Or Naval officers.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Two friends? Woah. That's a lot of unsupplemented ramen...

I hope there are pirates. Or Naval officers.

There might be both, depending.

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently, caffeine leaches vitamin C from the system. So if you're subsisting on bread products and processed meats, do not wash it down with pots of coffee or gallons of Coke...

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Well, that's good to know.

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes my friends are dumb ;)

But at least they can serve as a warning to the rest of us!

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. My first thought was, "ooh, AU. Scurvy. Interesting." and then my second thought was, "oh god, those poor boys."

You're really pretty mean to them, you know. You could at least send some flowers. ;)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think they might take out a restraining order on me. :(

And in my defense, I was totally going to inflict the scurvy on another character...

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
You do AU all the time though...? Or do you mean, not even in the SPN universe kind of AU? Not just Sam's-an-amnesian AU or Dean's-a-little-kid-with-Cas-in-a-post-apocalyptic-world AU?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I mean in the not-SPN-universe kind of AU. Like a Dean-and-Cas-are-high-powered-corporate-executives kind of AU.

FYI, I am all sorts of excited by my idea (even if it has no plot) and Dean is totally going to be limping and brandishing a cane at people who get in his way. Because I CAN.

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
I AM ALL SORTS OF EXCITED ABOUT IT TOO!

(who needs plot?)

[identity profile] rainylemons.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Pft. You so have a plot. You so so SO have a plot. I have confirmed this and my word cannot be denied. (LOL)

Remind me to find you later on ym so that I can beg you to hurt Sam a little. LOL

[identity profile] werty30.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I know about scurvy is that it makes your teeth fall out. D:
Looks like soon I`m going to read a story about tooothless men and like it. *resigned*

[identity profile] emmram.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, scurvy. Are you going to go the full hog? Bleeding gums, everything? Yikes. (But as far as I was aware, scurvy is very rare, these days. Vitamin C deficiency... hm. Can it be caused by the genetic absence of an enzyme? Scurvy-like symptoms? *scampers to find out*)

Oh, and fandom. I have a few Christian friends, and I keep bothering them about Biblical mythology. Mostly they are bemused, and find it seriously hilarious that I'm interested in the religion because I read/write Supernatural fanfic. "We should get a Bible," I told my mother, and I was rewarded with dubious glances. But hey! Show's educational, right?

Also, every forensic medicine lecture I keep thinking, now how can I inflict this upon the Winchesters. It's crazy.
