Angsty wittering about BigBang, Part 1

This is likely the first of much angst-ridden wringing-of-hands posts about BigBang. Hey, y'all have been reading my Angsty Author's Notes long enough to realize that I am a giant neurotic mess about my writing, right? Right? Well, if you didn't, this is your official notice. ;)

So I'm making a poll. Because I can, and it amuses me. The poll has a three-fold purpose:

1- I noticed everyone and their cousin is making filters for BB, so who am I to resist jumping on the bandwagon? The thing is, filters are annoying and create extra work, so if no one cares I can just as easily shove the BB stuff behind an LJ-cut and put an end to it there.

2- I don't know what to write! (Yes, we're all shocked) The problem is not that I have no ideas, but rather that I have too many half-baked ideas. So I'm trying to make things easier on myself by putting the choice out there and seeing what happens.

3- An information request that has nothing to do with BB, or might end up being really crucial to it, I don't know yet. Humour me.

So, yeah. Here goes! :)

Ya, so I had this big response to this last night and when I went to post it....

True story. fuckers.

Anyhoo, what I had basically said was this:
20000 is not really all that much for a fic, as you've prolly seen working on Take Me home [which surely must top 20000 no?]. So what I was going to say is this: you don't have to chose for your BB, you can tinker with several ideas and then the one that you like best, you can submit.

For me, I find it's helpful to be working on several things at once so when one stalls out, there's not as much pressure, I just work on something else until the first idea shakes loose.

and if you make a BB Filter, I totes want in on it. I love reading/talking about writing. mostly when I should be writing.

I have my Dark Shadows thingy and that may end up being my BB if I don't post it before the due date. I also have my 'official' bb idea which I guess is kind of a casefic. It's gonna be like the Shining - Sam and Dean trapped in a creepy haunted hotel/motel with the caretakers [brother and sister- yes the dreaded Original Characters....]. And they're trapped their until the snow melts or until the motel lets them go.

and then I have my metraton verse that I will be picking away at, and I really want to pursue Deaf!dean, but I've not had time to devote to finding a story for him. And I did want to bring back Alecto for a coda to my xmas fic.

so I just rotate around and write what I can when i can.

So, the moral of this [VERY LONG] story is: don't pigeon hole yourself! start them all! see what sticks!

LJ Maintenance happened while I was in the middle of a really gripping multi-chapter fic, right at a cliffhanger. GAH!

I sympathize.

I'm likely going to take your advice and tinker with the fic ideas I have and see what sticks/what I like best. I'm a bit like you, in that having multiple things to work on gives me the opportunity not to stall out.

I still have my Deaf!Dean thing to work on too, which is already quite long, so maybe that would work too if everything else fizzles horribly.

Food for thought. Anyway, yeah, if I do make a filter I'll totally include you. :)

Also, Original Characters are the backbone of a good casefic. I don't understand the weird premise that a lot of ficcers buy into that ALL OC's are somehow bad or Mary Sue-ish. It's not true and in fact a good OC will make a story (just as a bad OC can break a story).

The show is about Sam and Dean, sure, but they don't exist in a vacuum. :P

I totally agree. because usually it's the OC's that have the emotional connection in a casefic.

Remember Layla from "Faith"[Season 1]? That episode wouldn't have been as good without her. and if she hadn't been written/played correctly, NO ONE would have believed Dean at the end when he said he would pray for her.

So I'm hoping that my OC's will do okay out there in fandom. I already feel a certain connection to them. Like all my OC's they are like my kids! I have a ton of original fic [that I hope to finish and get published one day] and all my characters are near and dear to me.

Of course Sam and Dean are too, but I feel like their step-mom or adoptive mom, where as OC's are my babies!
