Fusion (Master Post)

Title: Fusion (Master Post)
Prompt/Summary: This is a 'verse that started out as a single comment-fic, prompted by [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique at a Dean-focused h/c comment-fic meme over at [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time. The original prompt is here, and went thusly: Dean fucks up his knee one too many times and either has to amputate or fuse it, so he chooses to have it fused.
So the prompt kind of grew in my head, and turned into a Sam-comes-back-from-hell story, and then it kind of became a curtain!fic, and then it became a 'verse. Each story can mostly stand alone, although it helps if you read the first one, so you know the basic premise.
Characters: mainly Sam 'n' Dean, a bunch of OCs, and quite possibly some canon characters might pop up later.
Rating: Will vary from fic to fic, please check out individual headers
Disclaimer: I'm holding out hope that I might get them for Christmas this year. Until then, none of 'em are mine.
Warnings: Will vary from fic to fic, please check out individual headers

Fusion
Summary: Prompt: Dean fucks up his knee one too many times and either has to amputate or fuse it, so he chooses to have it fused. He can walk with little-to-no pain, but he underestimated how incredibly frustrating it is to have a permanently unbendable leg -- everything is a challenge; sitting, climbing stairs, getting comfortable in bed, and he can't even drive.

In from the Rain
Summary: The whole town knows that sometimes, Sam Winchester doesn't have the good sense to come in out of the rain.

The Han Solo Guide to Successful Retirement
Summary: Dean comes down with the ‘flu, and the world doesn’t end.

Only Found Another Orphan
Summary: Sam and Dean have an unexpected encounter one day at the bookstore.

Mock the Midnight Bell
Summary: In which Sam 'n' Dean have a long-overdue chick-flick moment in the wee hours of the morning. We all know Dean secretly likes 'em. ;)

And Death's Dark Shadows Put To Flight
Summary: Sam goes missing shortly before Christmas, and Dean manages not to freak out completely.

Home to My Heart
Summary: Chronologically set before And Death's Dark Shadows Put To Flight. Dean has to go away for a few days, and leaves Sam in the care of a friend.

Simple Misadventure
Summary: A simple coffee run goes wrong, because accidents can happen to anyone, at any time... Chronologically set after And Death's Dark Shadows Put To Flight.

Out of the Light
Summary: Set right after Simple Misadventure. Sam isn't sure what's real anymore.

A Brief Visit
Summary: Margery pays Sam a visit, mostly because she's curious about the mysterious new friend who is supposed to be looking after him while Dean is off in the city training his new helper dog. Set between Home to My Heart and And Death's Dark Shadows Put To Flight.

BONUS FIC!

The lovely an talented [livejournal.com profile] lavinialavender has written a ficlet set in the same 'verse (though I will not be taking it into account when writing my own stuff —much simpler for me that way). Simple Gifts, in which Bobby pays the boys a visit. It's a very sweet look at the boys through Bobby's eyes. :)

Thanks for this post - I can see I missed a couple stories, and I had begged for more from this 'verse. Can't wait to sit down and read.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
My pleasure!

I figured it would be easier for people rather than having to wade through the "Fusion" tag I made way back when, although I'll still be using that too. :)

It's my pleasure entirely!

Looks just fine to me!

If you'd like, you could add Roses in December to that list too. It has both boys with leg injuries: Dean's screwed up his ankle, and Sam is in a wheelchair for a good portion of the story. It's a WIP, but I keep adding bits to it. :)

It's just a suggestion, mind you. It's your list. :)

I just wanted to take a minute to say that I like that icon. It appeals to me. :)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-09-27 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The one on the entry? It's an [livejournal.com profile] iconsbycurtana icon. The quote is from Neil Gaiman. I'm quite fond of it. :)

It's like every time I think I've read everything you've written I find a new 'verse master post....O_o
But this is a seriously great 'verse. Seriously. (sorry, lacking words at the moment. But it is.)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-01 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I do tend to write a lot, mostly in bursts every few weeks, so don't feel too bad if you can't get to it all. It's not like the fic is going anywhere, and you can always refer back to the Master List at the top of my LJ if you're ever feeling adventurous. ;)

A-freaking-dorable. I love this 'verse so much! Please tell me you'll write more!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-07 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! Yes, I am absolutely planning on writing more. :)

Wow, great 'verse. Found here via [livejournal.com profile] calamitycrow's link and what a gread read it was.

Thanks for writing.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you like it. I have quite the soft spot for this 'verse too. :)

[identity profile] sinka.livejournal.com 2010-11-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow... just... Wow! Just a few days ago you self-recced this story to me [livejournal.com profile] spnstoryfinders and I just can say THANK YOU, thank you *very* much. This verse WAY MORE what I was hoping when I made the request for domestic fics, in fact I think it's one of the best supernatural fics EVER! I really want read like another 500 fics in this 'verse!

Your writing skills are amazing and it simply sucked me in. Sam and Dean's personalities are perfect, being both flawed and hurt but strong and courageous at the same time. And even the outsider's voices rang true to me... In fact I found myself choking back tears several times when reading their views of the brothers... This story has such a mix between sweetness and hopelessness that blows my mind. I really *really* want both of them to be all right again, to be whole, but it's so clear it's not going to happen (at least not soon) that my heart hurts for them and my eyes sting. And at the same time they have managed to find some real and deserved moments of happiness together in that wonderful small community and they are *together*!! and clearly shows that's what really matters for them! in spite of all the obstacles and difficulties and now in their retirement they still have each other's back!

In summary, I love your depiction of Dean and Sam to pieces, so full of love, insight and understanding for both brothers. And, honestly, this is really surprising for me because I've been in the fandom for only a year and I always thought I was partial to wincest but *this* is SO MUCH better! Because in your writting can *feel* their bond, love and devotion in their every word and movement.

So... uh... sorry for the rambling and if I'm coming out as a totally crazy because I really want to friend you and stalk you right now and read every one of your fics (I know I'll get throuh them all eventually) and if you have a list of favorite authors and fics I would love to see it too!

Again, thank you very very much for writting this earth-shattering story! (hope to see more soon!)

*beams*

Dude, this comment made my day. I'm so glad you enjoyed the 'verse so much.

Welcome aboard!

[identity profile] vail-kagami.livejournal.com 2010-11-22 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this on so many rec lists now, and already read it twice. Just now realised I never left a comment. Shame on me - this is awesome!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-03 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
(Catching up on comments. I am SO BEHIND.)

I'm thrilled you liked it! This is by far one of my favourite things I've written.

*looks at her sentence*

I think that's English... time to go to bed, clearly.

Anyway, thank you!

[identity profile] hells-half-acre.livejournal.com 2010-12-07 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I just found this! It's excellent - a very well written and beautifully broken 'verse.

I love how you manage to have Sam float from being just like he always has been to something different and damaged and still keep it organic and believable.

I love the outsider POVs as well - it's almost like you have two stories going on simultaneously - the story of Sam and Dean acclimatizing to their new life, and the story of the town's people acclimatizing to having two damaged and mysterious "war veterans" in town.

Mainly, I love how you keep Sam charming, even when he's not quite himself.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-07 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

My theory is that Sam can come out of hell and still be the Sammy I love, even if he's not quite right. (Hear that, Show? ;) )

I'm very pleased you're enjoying it.

loved this verse are there going to be more stories? maybe dean finds someone to help him out with sam and he can share his life with? loved the last story it was nice to see bobby involved since he's been a father to them.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! There will definitely be more stories in the 'verse, although I have no plans for any major romantic developments for the moment.

The last story is by [livejournal.com profile] lavinialavender, but I have no doubt Bobby will be making an appearance in the stories at some point. :)

Just read the entire series in 6 hours(Taking a break to watch the new eps of Smallville and Supernatural, of course)! It is so unbelievably magnificent! Please tell me you're going to have more soon?? This story is so addicting, I can't get enough of it! Probably going to re-read them all over again til a new post is up. : )

Ooh, I just found it and I love it! I hope you're planning on adding more, because this series is so wonderful and... gah! *incoherent love* :-)

Okay, okay, stuff I loved about it... The small-town mentality; as someone who lives in one, I can say that you've got it down perfectly. I'm really enjoying your OCs and find myself wishing to see more from their POV, and not just from Sam and Dean.

The care that you've taken in portraying Dean's disability and Sam's mental illness is just so wonderfully done. The part with Sam having an "if lost, please call..." tag around his neck was just so sad, it made me tear up. But I wonder if Dean should just invest in one of those tracking devices that they make nowadays, considering how often Sam wanders off.

I liked Castiel's brief cameo. His solemnity and being so touched by Sam's acceptance into his family was really sweet.

But anyway, write more soon? :-)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-05-22 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yes, I am absolutely going to be writing more in this 'verse. I have several kernels of ideas that will one day be stories.

People have suggested already that Dean get Sam a tracking chip, but those things are expensive and probably illegal to put in humans. ;)

great job on making this so real!!

thank you!!

I just read this verse today. I have no idea how I have missed it until now. It is wonderful. I love how you have written the boys so in character, yet different. I am especially in awe of your Sam in this verse. He is heartbreaking and yet still Sam. So well done.

And Dean's devotion is also perfectly in character and so well done. I also am so impressed with your secondary characters. The town is wonderful and such a great place for the boys. I love the Dr., Sophie and especially Margery and how they all take care of the boys. And I love that Dean allows himself and Sam to be taken care of. And how can I forget Perry? The perfect addition.

So basically, I love everything. This is a great verse and I can't wait for more. Thanks so much for brightening my Saturday.

I'm not sure if anyone's asked this yet (and if they have, sorry), but I was just wondering.... why have you chosen not to post the links in chronological order as you post them? It gets kind of confusing in the current format. :-)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-09-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I post them in the order in which I've written them, rather than anything else.

I may be mistaken, but thus far I've found they make more sense read in that order rather than "chronologically." Mind you, I keep meaning to make a second list to do just that, so people can make up their own minds.

I am in love with this 'verse. The relationship is so believable and gut-twisting and both brothers are so present, which is hard to do consistently. I personally stick to Gen/J2, which means missing out on a LOT in this fandom. So I am just elated to find a 'verse this good and chuck-full of h/c I can read. THANK YOU.
You do such a good job describing both brothers' sysiphian healing process, too -- the back and forth, the good and bad days (Sam's "it's a good day" still breaks my heart weeks after I read the first few installments). Although I have to admit that I secretly, shamefully, like Sam the most when he is all broken and vulnerable and Dean when he is uber-protective. Regardless, the narrative is beautiful and heart-wrenching.
Not sure how I managed to miss two whole chapters going up. Damn. o-O Off to read them now.
I so hope this 'verse gets podficced (sp?) eventually. It's so good. Thank you, again.

[identity profile] imaginecoolname.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, so let me start this by saying: I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU MADE ME READ GEN! Because I don't read Gen. Like ever. If I wanted Gen, I'd just stick to Show, but I need Fandom to fill in the so obviously missing slashy bits. But then this happened. You...you...evilly talented writer, you! I just couldn't stop reading and it made me all heartbroken and warm and mushy at the same time, and how dare you make me go back on my principles, and please can you write some more of this? So yeah, you broke me. :) It's just too good.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you so much! I am always happy to convert people to gen, it's a rather neglected aspect of fandom, and there is a LOT of good gen out there that's well worth investigating. :)

There will be more of the 'verse, have no fear!

[identity profile] familybizness.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
GOD I love this 'verse! Will there be more?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2011-10-25 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, absolutely. I'm not writing these days due to moving/work/real life, but I plan to get back to it very soon. :)
