The Song Remains The Same
So I finally, finally got to watch 5.13. Thoughts are behind the lj-cut, as usual.
Okay, I saw the previews, so I knew Anna was going to show up. I am surprised at the contents of Dean's dream, though. Is it me, or is he becoming a bit of a parody of himself this season? It's as though the writers have forgotten what it's supposed to be like inside his head. No more flashbacks to hell? No more dreams of happy picnics with imaginary families? Huh.
CAS! OH! *gathers Cas into a big smooshy hug*
I knew Cas had decided to be Sam's friend and ally, I knew it, but this is the first time he's said it out loud! Protective!Cas is awesome.
Apparently time-travel is crappy for angels, too.
Glenn Close? I don't get it. Something about boiling rabbits.
Oh, Sam. Having your atoms scattered across the universe will NOT HELP.
"I don't understand that reference." Oh, Cas. You kill me.
Hee! "Bend your knees." (
pkwench, I'm looking at you: being zapped around by angels always lands you on your ass)
Eep! Cas! THAT'S NOT GOOD!
"Tough for a little nerdy dude with wings." Aww, Dean. Not wanting to reveal how worried you are about your angel. *pets him*
Aww, Mary and John are adorable!
Mary's cousins, huh?
Sam, dude, you need to snap out of it, ASAP. I realize these are your parents and you only ever saw your mother once and this is an opportunity to see your father before he became your drill sergeant, but you are creeping everyone out.
Oh, hey, John's pretty badass even when he's not a hunter!
Never mind. Mary is badass! HOLY SHIT SHE STABBED ANNA WITH A CROWBAR!
HAH! Sneaky!Sam draws an enochian sigil.
So... if John knows about Supernatural things now, does that change the whole future? I love the "turn the car around" reference. After all, wasn't Sam and Dean's entire childhood an awkward family road trip? How many times must John have said that to his kids?
And Dean gets to teach his father something else. First the Impala, now the sigils.
"Irresponsible bastard," eh John? Oh, the irony! Looks like Sam has come to terms with John Winchester's decisions.
*wibbles*
Oh, Sam. This is out of left field, but I'm so very, very glad you're finally getting this scene with your dad.
HOLY SHIT IT'S URIEL! Oh, wait. Different vessel. HOLY CRAP! PAST!URIEL. Now that's freaking unexpected.
Dean with the truth. That never works out well for him.
"Hey Jude?" God, I'm going to cry.
I don't think I like this solution of Mary leaving John. (Sam is breaking my heart, again.) Obviously, neither does she. "You're dead and your children are cursed." Holy shit. *is stabbed through heart*
Aaaand of course it's too late. It's 1978, so of course she's pregnant with Dean. Crap crap crap.
"We have a problem." I love the writing on this show. The timing of that line is brilliant.
I think we have a serious, SERIOUS problem.
Oh my GOD she killed Sam! Holyshitholyshitholyshit!
HOLY CRAP!!!
(I'm doing that a lot this episode)
JOHN WINCHESTER IS MICHAEL'S VESSEL! How is he not being burned from the inside-out? Must be a blood thing (like Jimmy Novak's family). Oh, hey, I was right! A blood-line thing. :)
So... Michael's kind of a dick, and God apparently has a Plan. Oh, apparently Michael doesn't leave his vessels a drooling mess. Huh. That's convenient. It also messes up half of fandom's previous stories. Free will is an illusion, is it? That remains to be seen.
At least this explains why John and Mary don't try to stop the YED in the nursery.
"I am very surprised." Oh, Cas. I gotta say I was expecting Dean or at least Sam to act a little more concerned. Maybe I've been reading too much fanfic.
Is it weird that I'm a little disappointed there wasn't more Cas in this episode?
"Team Free Will." Hee!
Guh. This episode is apparently all about stabbing me through the heart.
(I gotta say: John and Mary aged really fast in four years.)

I loved that. Especially the way he said it- like it's something he's had to say like a bajillion times before, and that teensy flash of frustration.
>>Aaaand of course it's too late. It's 1978, so of course she's pregnant with Dean. Crap crap crap.>>
You'd think Dean would have been able to do the math on that one.
>>s it weird that I'm a little disappointed there wasn't more Cas in this episode?>>
Not at all. There was awesome cas in the beginning! And then he just went away, and I was a sad fangirl.
There were many good things about this episode, but overall it left me puzzled. But I'm going to need to think on it some more. I am not ashamed to admit that the number of extremely good looking guys running around and looking intent and badass severely hindered my ability to think analytically.

I just think it would be really hard not to fall. LOL I can't help it. :D
Your reactions to this episode were about like mine. Only, you know, coherent.

John and Mary did age really fast in 4 years, but they were raising Dean Winchester in those four years. (Also? Actually a little more than 5, but still.) LOL. I do have an issue with the age difference between the actors as well--it worked when it was 10.5 years before the beginning of Pilot, but now it's only 5 and a few months.

The age difference between the actors bothers me for this episode only, because John and Mary went from being baby-faced twenty-year-olds to looking practically middle-aged in about five years (math isn't my strong suit either). Even with the stress of raising Dean, it can't account for all of it. ;)

"I don't understand that reference." Oh, Cas. You kill me. Me too! He just sounded like he's said it so many, many times. Sam was seriously creeping everyone out. Anna was an idiotic bitch-angel. When you are trying to kill someone and they stab you with a pointy thing that doesn't really even slow you down, pull the damn thing out and stab THEM with it. Could have ended the whole thing right there, but no, she had to listen to herself talk a little more so Michael could come and kill her poorly acted ass. Loved, loved, loved bad ass John and Dean's reaction to him. Loved when Dean told Mary the truth and you're right, it never works out well. The end killed me. Angels will watch over you. Yes they will, the dicks, but they won't be watching for anything good. Really liked this epi. The boys keep saying they'll say no, but I dont' think even they really believe it any more.

*weeps*
I know, and it breaks my heart! At least we know Dean won't be a vegetable when it's over. Convenient loophole, that. :P

Re: awkward road trips, Uriel, BAMF Mary, and "Team Free Will"– THIS.
Also, word to messing up half of fandom's previous stories >=( The hiatus wasn't fun but at least cannon stayed still for one goshdurn second.

I am quite disappointed that there appears to be no real downside to Dean's saying "yes" now. It's all a little too convenient.

I think the only downsides for Dean now, providing Michael isn't telling a big fib, is 1-saying yes and riding along while Michael scorches the planet while trouncing Lucifer and 2-risking the possability of having to do battle against Lucy/Sam.
I guess I'd just have to hope that there must be a reason why it's Sam and Dean. Maybe, somehow, the apocalypse isn't so much about dealing with Lucifer once and for all so much as settling things with him and Michael. I doubt it and I don't know, but man.
Next question - would Lucifer burn out Sam? Cause, the thought of him aware with the devil in there just makes me so sad for him. How horrible. Worse than any demon possession survivor ever. Puppy!
Speaking of things that make me sad, did that throw away line from Dean last night about he and Sam being okay with having never been born just break your heart a tiny bit or what?

I have SO MUCH LOVE for this episode. :)
