What fresh fuckery is this, LJ?

So in spite of vociferous protests, LJ has gone and changed the comment box format. Among the "improvements":

- No more subject line
- No more drop-down box to select icons (instead there is a bandwidth-sucking thumbnail view)
- No more thread and parent links in posted comments
- No more ability to preview comments before posting

You know what? This sucks. How am I supposed to run

ohsam, in which I always track comment threads by subject title? WTF, LJ? It wasn't broken!

Okay. Other moderators, have you given any thought to a workaround on this? At this point, I am close to letting my paid account & icons just lapse and to find some damn where else to post, but I've been with LJ for nearly ten years and I hate change.

Thoughts?

The 'link' link when you hover over a comment is your 'thread' link. I'm not quite sure about the userpic thing, truly, but mostly for mobile versions, not really for desktop.

As for the subject line, I've read that LJ is going to install some fixes so that comms can still have the subject lines and things like that. Check either the help or your comm profile/settings? Maybe it's there already.

But there's no parent link. This SUCKS for comment fic memes. Also, I don't want to have to enable custom comments on my pages. I like the default look: it's clean and easily read, and custom comment pages are generally really hard to navigate.

ARGH.

Why fix something when it's not broken? WHY?

I really hate the changes but thankfully my custom comment page didn't change. I know a lot of kink meme mods are going to S2 layouts with custom comments for now.

Yeah, I guess. I'm just pissed that minding my own business results in LJ going to hell in a handbasket. Imma go poke at it now, see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion!

I get it. It's a stupid pointless change that no one was excited about and everyone was against.

Okay, I don't like the customized comments, but at least it has a subject line and all the other bells and whistles. Fine, I will use that for now.

The only I like is the thumbnail view but I could have continued to live without it...why LJ why?

I want my custom comment page disabled :(
I like how clean and easy to read it is but dude I can't live with that ugly ass mess of a comment thingy. YUCK.

Also my (former) journal style was not something everyone would find easy to read. So I changed it and now its boringa s fuck but not hard on the eyes. I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER :((

Dreamwidth. Dreamwidth is awesome. And free account creation with no invite till...I'm not sure exactly but I think it's the end of the year. I bet if you pack up

ohsam and move it to Dreamwidth, we'll start getting other people to move off LJ because they were only staying for the comms. Hell, I'm only staying for the comms, and because it's easier to track you and

setissma and a few other people via LJ flist than by RSS feed on DW reading page.

What she said -- Dreamwidth is responsive to its users, and people don't need an invite to set up a free account until the end of the year. But, also, if comm mods want to migrate to DW, they can contact support and get a kind of "comm code invite" to allow all your members to use the same code, instead of finding their own. (For anyone who considers doing this after the first of the year.)

Hmm... I'm seeing a subject line for this comment. (I'll put one in and see if it shows up.) Maybe LJ is making more differences between paid and unpaid? If so, even worse suckitude; subject lines shouldn't be a type of 'premium'.

I had to use the style?mine option to comment here because with the new comment thing a) I can't choose my userpic, it just doesn't work, and b) the post comment button is frozen, so I can't even use it for LEAVING COMMENTS, subject line or not. This is the epitome of ridiculous - WHY in the everloving hell do they want everyone to move to dreamwidth while fixing shit that is-not-broken? *facepalm* I couldn't even leave a comment on LJ's news page because it wouldn't let me post.

These changes are literally making me sick to my stomach (which is probably an awesome sign that I'm over-invested, but I've known that for years). The userpic thing is going to drive me crazy.

The news page has 45 pages of people telling them what a bad idea this is/was, and how much it sucks. You'd think they would listen, but yeah. Apparently they don't want our business any longer. :(

That's so weird! Everyone's been complaining about this, but when I go to comment, I get the old form. Yours is the first journal where I've actually seen the new one. I don't mind the thumbnail icons, but I went to a lot of trouble to name them all so they'd show up in groups in the dropdown (kittens, Supernatural), and the thumbnails are in upload order. This is not as good.

I've never understood what parent and thread were for, but losing the subject line? That's just stupid. Why on earth did they do that?

I'm glad you posted this. I got up and everyone's writhing on the floor in agony about the changes and I still didn't know what they *were*. Thanks for laying them all out, seriously.

"eeeewwww" is all that I have to say about the new comment page. Where are my html options? Where is the tidy orderly layout? I was just getting used to LJ and the layouts etc... :/

I agree with you, why fix something if it's not broken? It's like Facebook and Twitter to name but a few webpages that have changed their layout :(
