[RL Post] Smudge needs a new home. Help?

Does anyone local know someone in need of a cat? (By local I mean Montreal, Canada, and thereabouts)

Poor Smudge is not adjusting well to the dog.

Worse, the dog is not adjusting to Smudge either. The dog got into the spare room tonight where Smudge has been camping out, lunged up onto the furniture after him and tried to bite him. Or eat him, I honestly can't tell. He literally had his jaws around poor Smudge by the time I managed to intervene, and I nearly broke my finger getting them apart.

Since Sergent is here to stay and is fine with the other two cats, I think I need to re-home Smudge in a nice, calm place where there are no other cats or pets of any kind. He's a sweet, affectionate cat with people—it's just other animals he doesn't get along with. He hasn't had any behavioural issues in years: he always uses the litter box (even the whole time the dog was stressing him out, no less!), and cuddles with me and purrs whenever I go into the room.

As much as it breaks my heart, I think he would do better in a single cat household. Right now I feel like he's being punished for something that's not his fault or his doing.

Anyone in the area looking for a cat? Or do you know someone looking for a cat? If you do, point them my way, please. Smudge deserves a better life than the one he has now. If there's interest, I am happy to answer any and all questions about my kitty)

Two of my housemates and I would be so SO willing to help give Smudge a new home but unfortunately our other housemate is allergic to cats. Best of luck!

Drat. Thanks anyway!

Sorry, m'dear. I don't really know anyone in Montreal. :( But best of luck finding a new home for him!

Thank you!

I've asked my friends in Montreal if they know anyone who wants a cat. I'll let you know if they do. :)

Thank you so much! I appreciate your asking. :)

Did you find someone? My friends could take it if you think it would get along with another cat (who is deaf and has a breathing problem). Otherwise, they say they'll keep an ear out.

I might have someone lined up, but they're out of town until next weekend so I won't know for sure until then.

Thank you so much, and I may take you up on your friends' really generous offer! Smudge should be fine if the other cat is not overly aggressive, as he's lived nicely with my other cats for several years now.

Cool! Let me know. :) I'll email them and give them the update.

I wish you were closer; I'd think about taking Smudge. We do have one cat already but she's always been interested in neighborhood cats, in a curious, friendly way. If Smudge were game, Madison might be an eventual buddy. Not sure about crossing the border with an animal, either. How old is Smudge?

[identity profile] de-nugis.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Just breaking in to say that crossing the border with a cat is no big deal -- my late cat and I drove back and forth from Toronto to the states many, many times. If you're driving, all you need is a rabies vaccination certificate, and I've never once had anyone actually ask to see it. If you're flying, you need a health certificate from a vet issued within I think ten days of departure certifying that the animal is fit to fly -- that's true for flying within the States as well, it doesn't have to do with crossing the border. The one thing to be careful of is, weirdly, cat food. It's simplest not to try crossing the border with pet food in the car at all, but if you do, crossing into the States, you want food that was imported from the States originally, and it should be in its official bag that says so, not in tupperware or something.

Ratherastory, sorry I'm full up on cats and too far away. I hope Smudge finds a good home!

Yeah, no worries, I didn't think that 99% of my fandom friends would be close enough, but word-of-mouth helps sometimes, you know?

I'm going to keep looking.

Smudge is 13 or 14, near as any of us can tell. I have no exact birth records or anything for him. He did get along (sort of) with my other cats. Mostly they just avoided each other when the space was big enough to accommodate that sort of thing.

(Where do you live? You don't have to say it in public, I'm just curious.)

I'm in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio...so a good day's drive.

*jumps into conversation to wave at you from Cincinnati*

I'll bet there's a fair number of us Buckeyes here in the LJ SPN fandom! My hubs went to school in Cinci...

My friend in BC is going to ask around her Montreal relatives.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate it. :)

Wish I could help, but just wanted to chime in that I completely understand your predicament. I know all about single cats and I had one that just didn't mix well with others, no matter how much time and patience we tried to give her. She's much happier now by herself. I'm sure Smudge will make a great transition once he finds the right place!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I appreciate it. Poor Smudge.

[identity profile] framlingem.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I may know someone in Brossard. Can you tell me a bit more about Smudge?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a possible home lined up for Smudge right now, but thank you for your offer! If the others don't pan out I may appeal back to you.

Smudge is about 14 years old. He's a black long-haired domestic cat of unknown heritage (100% purebred Canadian Barn Cat, in other words). He's very quiet and clean, but also really neurotic and won't do well in a home with other pets. He's horrifically shy but really affectionate with humans he trusts, and has no really bad behavioural issues (no spraying, no scratching, and no peeing/pooping outside the litter box).

[identity profile] framlingem.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the description. It doesn't sound like he'd do very well in my friend's house as she has a cat (she's looking for a companion cat) already who's quite a character. I hope your possible home for him works out, he sounds like a lovely fellow.
