Why, LJ?

I missed the "random posting" day. Sorry.

Can anyone tell me how to put my friends "feed" back to the way I had it before LJ decided that imposing their new style on me was actually what I really wanted? I have googled and searched the FAQs, to no avail, and I really loathe the new look. I liked it the way I had it before, thanks!

Also, I apologize for the lack of fic. )

Hi all! I am coming to my usually fandom-only LJ to make a shameless begging post, since I can use the signal boost and I am quite sure there are at least a couple of fandom people in Ottawa.

My current rental situation is becoming problematic. Between the rent and the gas money, I won't be able to afford it for much longer (i.e., about one more month).

I'm looking to rent a (hopefully inexpensive) room within walking or even cycling distance of Vanier Parkway/Coventry/Riverside Drive in Ottawa, starting May 1st.

If you know anyone who could use a roommate, or who has an extra bedroom to spare, could you point them my way? I'll only be in town about half the days of the month, two weekends a month, and I'll be at work for 12 hours a day, so I'll be practically invisible! I can also provide references, if necessary.

I am happy to help out with extra cleaning/cooking/chores/whatever on the days I'm in town (and I can provide my own furniture if needs be). I'm also willing to look further out if it means the room is considerably cheaper (to compensate for the extra gas I'd have to buy).

My budget is about $350 CDN a month, preferably less. I can maybe manage up to $400 if it's within actual walking distance of my work (since I can park at work and not worry about gas).

You can drop me a line via Private Message here, and I will send you more concrete contact information after that, since I don't really want to post my personal contact info on the internet for obvious reasons.

Thanks in advance!

Okay, fellow writers, I have a question.

How do you handle real-life settings with which you're not familiar? I've been reading (dangerous, I know), and many of the books on writing all agree that having a strong setting will add richness and depth to your story.

On the surface, I totally agree. I am a big fan of good world-building when it comes to sci fi and fantasy, for instance. I also love books in which I get a real feel for the setting, the stench of a city's underbelly or the stark beauty of the cityscape at night, the fragrant smells of farmland, etc. I can usually tell when an author is writing about a setting they've lived in or experienced first hand.

The few times I've used setting to good effect, it's been when I was familiar with the locale. In my long-abandoned zombie novel, I was able to follow the characters from street to street and describe in very accurate detail not only what they were seeing, but the kind of weather they were experiencing, the colour of the buildings, etc. In another story, The Built in a Day Job, to be precise, I used my recent trip to Rome in the springtime to evoke all the sights and sounds and smells of the city that were vital to what I was trying to accomplish in my story.

So what am I supposed to do when I need to set my story in one or more places with which I'm not at all familiar? Somewhere I've never been? I can give overall impressions of a place based on research, but I have no idea how to get the level of detail I would like to put into a story. Is there really a shop on that street corner in Memphis? Is that a one-way street? What bus routes should my characters be taking in Calgary? Is there even reliable public transit? What's the weather like in Colorado in March? What did Cambridge smell like in summer in the late 1800s?

So how do you handle it when you have to write in an unfamiliar setting? Any advice?

Internets, I SUCK and have 9k of summergen due TONIGHT.

I KNOW. /o\

My usual long-suffering and heroic beta is understandably unable to help me due to the SUPER-quick turnaround on this.

I think the story itself is sound, so I just need someone to go over it to make sure I haven't grossly abused the English language anywhere in it, and to point it out if I have.

Is anyone willing to throw themselves on this grenade? Comments are screened.

Thank you!!!!

Hola, fandom folk!

Some of you are French-speakers or know French, I am sure of it. I am on the lookout for m/m fiction in French. Original or fanfic, I am not picky.

I may be picking up some translation gigs in the near future, and while French is my native tongue, I am not familiar with the particular terminology and phrasing of, well, porn. Each genre has its own language and idioms, and my translating experience is primarily in the humanities (non-fiction).

So now I have to read porn for SCIENCE, you understand.

Help? Anyone? Bueller?

So [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time is having a curtain!fic challenge.

Curtain! fic & art Week
( September 16th – 23rd)

[Click on the image to go to the challenge.]

1- Go play. Go now. :)

2- My Muse has left the building, so I was thinking maybe I could shamelessly take advantage of my wonderfully creative flist. Anyone want to leave me a curtain!fic prompt that you'd like to see me write? You can prompt me in any of my existing 'verses (Fusion, Garden, whatever) or a stand-alone, with the caveat that it has to focus on hurt!Dean, since that's the challenge.

Humour me? Anyone?

Does anyone local know someone in need of a cat? (By local I mean Montreal, Canada, and thereabouts)

Poor Smudge is not adjusting well to the dog.

Worse, the dog is not adjusting to Smudge either. The dog got into the spare room tonight where Smudge has been camping out, lunged up onto the furniture after him and tried to bite him. Or eat him, I honestly can't tell. He literally had his jaws around poor Smudge by the time I managed to intervene, and I nearly broke my finger getting them apart.

Since Sergent is here to stay and is fine with the other two cats, I think I need to re-home Smudge in a nice, calm place where there are no other cats or pets of any kind. He's a sweet, affectionate cat with people—it's just other animals he doesn't get along with. He hasn't had any behavioural issues in years: he always uses the litter box (even the whole time the dog was stressing him out, no less!), and cuddles with me and purrs whenever I go into the room.

As much as it breaks my heart, I think he would do better in a single cat household. Right now I feel like he's being punished for something that's not his fault or his doing.

Anyone in the area looking for a cat? Or do you know someone looking for a cat? If you do, point them my way, please. Smudge deserves a better life than the one he has now. If there's interest, I am happy to answer any and all questions about my kitty)

I have been spoiled by the Supernatural Wiki. I am so used to having a reliable resource for my fanfiction out there: episode summaries, episode transcripts articles on every single thing that comes up in the Show. It's huge, it's comprehensive, and it's always up-to-date. It's a huge amount of work, and the owners and maintainers are awesome.

Hawaii Five-0? Not so much. I've found two wikis, this one which is pretty bare bones, and this one which is a little better but doesn't look to have been updated since late December/early January and doesn't have much more than copy-pastes of the episode press releases.

So, fandom, am I missing something? Is there a wiki out there which actually has the episode summaries and transcripts and character details I'm looking for? Or am I SOL?

The insane part of me that doesn't realize that I have no time OR html skills is telling me to just make my own, but that would be crazy, right? Right.

Hola, flist!

I am writing about Kono for the first time ever, and I know nothing about surfing. It's actually kind of important for my story.

Anyone got some good resources? I need to know the basics of how it works, and a primer on surfing etiquette would be most welcome.

Does anyone know of good books and/or resources that would explain the technical aspects of the preservation and, more importantly, the restoration of art works? More specifically paintings, but I am not especially picky about the medium if it comes down to it.

I am trying to write a story and realized that my plot kind of hinges on my understanding the ins and outs of how to restore paintings, which I emphatically do not. In fact, this is so far out of my league I don't even know where to start. /o\

Hola, folks!

I am in need of an intrepid beta for a quick-and-dirty look-see at about 15k of gen fic. It's an adventure-type case fic, written for an exchange. More details upon request, as I've been asked to keep identifying stuff to a minimum. :)

Anyone willing to help out? I need to give it one more pass tomorrow, and then I'd be sending it along. :)

Dear flist,

What are your favourite Noir films? Classics that everyone in their right minds should see? Hidden gems that I should know about?

I'm on a Noir kick & want to expand my repertoire.

Hey folks!

Anyone know where I can get some logo-free high-quality downloads of Supernatural? I'm looking for all seasons, but I'll take what I can get. :)

Thanks!

Hey flist!

I have a little under 2,000 words of Novakfest that need beta-ing. It's Jimmy, Claire and alternate!vessel!Cas with Amelia in a supporting role. Anyone feel like helping out?

So, theoretically, if I were to go to Wincon next year, would anyone be willing to share a room with me? I am very low-maintenance. ;)

*bats eyelashes*

I can pretty much only afford one con next year, and it sounds like so much fun, I'd love to be able to go.

Okay, I am a little premature, since my story isn't finished, but is anyone willing to beta a roughly 4-5k H50 fic for me later this week? I just need a quick-and-dirty SPaG check and someone to tell me when my sentences don't make sense. It's for the [livejournal.com profile] h50_exchange.

I will be working on it tonight and hopefully will have it finished by tomorrow evening.
