Title : The Bird that Feels the Light, written for the [livejournal.com profile] deancasbigbang
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] daggomus_prime
Beta: [livejournal.com profile] pkwench
Pairings: None. Dean, Cas, mentions of Sam. Gen.
Rating: PG13
Wordcount: 37,726
Warnings: General spoilers through Season 5. Show-levels of violence, angst, swearing. Human!Cas (do I even need to warn for that?).
Summary: AU from 5.18 (or thereabouts). Castiel awakens in the middle of a smoking crater, stranded and very much human. According to the people who have discovered him, it’s six months to the day after Michael and Lucifer faced off on the field of battle outside of Detroit, and Castiel isn’t the only one to have returned. When, at his insistence, they take him to this other person, he finds a child –a little boy– and realizes that, contrary to all his expectations, he has been reunited with Dean Winchester.
The world has changed in their absence, and not for the better. Sam is gone, whether dead or simply missing is uncertain. Castiel is given the name of a man in Idaho who may have answers for him. He is faced with the task of travelling cross-country with Dean, who is dependent on him now in ways he never was before, in order to discover the truth. But along the way, as he and Dean learn to know and trust each other once more, Castiel begins to realize that the answers he thought he wanted might not be the ones he needs.

“Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.”
~Rabindranath Tagore

Very Brief Author’s Notes:

There will be a long, long post at the end of all this in which I thank a bunch of people and lavish well-deserved praise upon all the people who helped. Nonetheless, pride of place on this master post must go to the spectacularly talented [livejournal.com profile] daggomus_prime, who not only created art for my story, but created something so beautiful it quite took my breath away. Be warned, one of the pieces of art is a MASSIVE spoiler for the end of the story, but it moved me to tears, to see it illustrated. I’m not kidding. [livejournal.com profile] daggomus_prime put up with my enthusiastic flailing and constant PMs and IMs with grace, and deserves extra cookies for being a very good sport indeed. :)

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my patient and long-suffering beta, [livejournal.com profile] pkwench. She brainstormed with me and helped me pull the story together. Some of the best scenes from the story are the direct result of her suggestions and prodding and poking. She fixed my grammar and syntax, pointed out typos, told me where my fic was veering off-course, and has basically helped mould this into a much better story than it started out as. She did all this and more, all the while working AND studying and producing her own fantastic fic to boot. I bow to her awesomeness.

I am vibrating with anticipation about the Big Bang tomorrow. I haven't seen the art yet, because [livejournal.com profile] daggomus_prime is still working on it, but if you've seen her other work you'll know, like me, that it's going to be EPIC.

I am SO EXCITED I can't even!

The fic, which exists in my head as The Adventures of Cas and wee!Dean, although that's not what it's called in reality, has totally taken over my brain. It's done, but it's easily one of my favourite stories since I wrote "Take Me Home" back in January/February.

I've been dying to post this thing since I finished editing and coding it yesterday, to the point where I'm going to email it to myself at work and attempt a stealth!post tonight after midnight if I can manage it. If they fire me, well, who needs a job anyway, right? I'm sure I can live off fanfic alone... /o\

I'm devolving into LOLcat speak, I'm so anxious to post. IT CAN HAZ BE TOMORROW TIEMZ NAOW PLZ? Gah.

I don't know what's wrong with me. I wasn't nearly this enthusiastic about posting my first BB, although I was just as proud of it and the art.

In short: Big Bang! Tomorrow! YAY! \o/

I got my posting date for the [livejournal.com profile] deancasbigbang!

So for the adventures of wee!Dean and Cas as they travel cross-country after the apocalypse in order to find answers to all their questions, mark your calendars! (And yes, the fic is gen, for those of you who are wondering)

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010.

Also, be sure to go make nice with my artist,[livejournal.com profile] daggomus_prime, who is crazy talented!

I don't know what libations I offered to which gods at what time, but I must have done good because I have LUCKED OUT this year with my big bang artists.

I'm following [livejournal.com profile] elsewhere_kels's example and posting my summary, just because.

So now with the Dean/Cas Big Bang draft done and sent in, and my [livejournal.com profile] summer_sam_love fic all written and ready to be posted on Monday, I just realized that I don't have another fic due for another three whole weeks!

This is exciting!

So of course now I feel like writing a whole bunch of other things. Which is silly, because starting in three weeks I have four fics due, one of which is another Big Bang (I know! I know!), although that one's not due for a month or so.

I swear to God, it's like crack. I can't leave it alone.

I'm also thinking of de-mothballing two old fics I wrote when I was just starting out in fandom. They're rough, but I have a soft spot for them because they're the first things I ever wrote in this fandom and they never got posted to my LJ. I think I should take ownership of them even if they're not as good as I'd like them to be. I'll probably post them tomorrow, maybe back-dated so I don't clutter up my flist.

..

The rest of this post is me talking to myself about dates and stuff. You can skip it if you'd like.

I have to update my list of ongoing works, and then get my ducks in a row, fic-wise. Apart from the challenge obligations, I have a handful of fics that I'd like to write or continue in the meantime.

So, challenges and dates are, in the order in which they're due:

[livejournal.com profile] summer_sam_love: episode tag to "The Rapture," due September 11th. No wordcount limits.

[livejournal.com profile] deancastiel: Secret Angels IV fic exchange, due September 17th. Minimum 2,000 words, and I already have the premise and a rough plot in mind.

[livejournal.com profile] werewolfbigbang: 10,000 words, due September 25th. Already begun, although I'm not sure I want to keep what I have.

[livejournal.com profile] kamikazeremix: 1,000 words minimum, due September 27th. Read the fic I'm remixing, pretty sure I know what I'm doing with it.

What I'd like to write also:

1- At least a couple more chapters of RiD. Ideally, maybe one new chapter a week. Maybe I should pick a day of the week on which it posts and just stick to once a week, so it's not feast-or-famine for my poor readers.

2- I have an idea for a crack!fic that won't leave me alone. It's mpreg. IDEK. I think I have to write it and get it out of my system.

3- [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique has kindly given me a prompt for my "Silent Night" verse, and I'd like to write it as a celebration of her finding accommodations and starting school and all that.

4- I owe [livejournal.com profile] peppervl a fic. Waiting on a prompt.

5- There are a couple of prompts over at the comment-fic meme going on at [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time which have piqued my interest. One of them will be a quickie, but the other one may take a while.

So, yeah. Lots of projects, very little time. Story of my life! It's all good, really. The second list doesn't ALL have to get done right away. It's more of a wish list than anything else. :)

My fic got claimed over at [livejournal.com profile] deancasbigbang by [livejournal.com profile] daggomus_prime.

I AM EXCITED!

Compared to the angst-ridden will-they-won't-they of the last BB, this is quite refreshing. ;)
