Supernatural Spam

(Wouldn't that make an awesome crack!fic? Haunted cans of Spam! Except that's not what this entry is about. Anway, moving right along...)

1- I am a devoted fangirl, and as such I am willing to spend the time uploading this Supernatural custom mood theme. Really, I am. But, dear LiveJournal, WHY IS IT SO FIDDLY? There has to be a better way than copy-pasting 100,000 individual URLs into the little boxes AND specifying the height and width in pixels. It's taking for-freaking-ever.

2- My coworker J is seriously freaking hooked on the show now. We watched right up until almost the end of Season 2 over night shift on Sunday, and she kind of fidgeted and hinted none-too-subtly about "Hey, maybe we should, y'know, do something today, since we're both off work."

So I invited her over for dinner and we watched the Season 2 finale and then we watched the first DVD of Season 3.

She's hilarious. She's like me, in that she yells at the TV when she gets anxious about what's going on. I have discovered that I love watching people's reactions to the show almost as much as I love the show itself. At the beginning of "All Hell Breaks Loose II" she started bouncing in her seat and yelling "Oh God, WHAT IS HE DOING?!? It's a crossroads! Daphné, tell me he's not doing what I think he's doing! OH, GOD, DEAN! NO! DON'T DO IT!"

We're definitely going to be watching more of it together.

3- I never mentioned it before, because I have a really short attention span (which is why most of my fiction is under 5,000 words), but I had it brought home to me as I re-watched the show (again, I know).

One of my favourite throw-away moments is in "Nightmare." Sam and Dean are heading out after Roger Miller is killed gruesomely (guillotine!window FTW!), talking about their next move, when a car horn sounds to the right of the camera. Even though they're well away from the street, Dean automatically moves forward and puts his hand in front of Sam's chest, in a classic soccer-mom move, to keep him away from the car. Even though Sam is in no danger whatsoever.

It warms my heart, I can't even tell you how much. Neither of them mention it or act like it's a big deal, Dean just does it because it comes naturally, and Sam doesn't even notice or roll his eyes or anything.

Oh, BOYS. *pets them*

This is why I love the show, too. The boys. I love my boys.

As for the mood theme, stop tormenting yourself. Put the provided code in notepad and use edit/replace all to change your location, size, etc. It will be a time saver!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... provided code?

I tried the text file provided, but LJ told me I didn't own the mood theme. I was most vexed. :(

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you have to upload and then go into the admin console. Here, these are the instructions that I always use and they're very helpful:

http://community.livejournal.com/crackified/603.html

I have copy of the admin code for the mood theme I have if you need it.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like an idiot, but it's like you're speaking a foreign language.

I know what the admin console is, but when you say "upload them" do you mean the individual pictures?

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the individual pictures from the mood theme unless it's a theme where someone has already uploaded the images and is allowing users to use their bandwidth.

Generally with mood themes, you'll download a zip file to your comp. Drop it in the folder of choice and there's generally all of your images along with the admin console code that looks like so:

moodtheme_setpic 12345 90 http://www.hosting.com/accomplished.jpg 100 50
moodtheme_setpic 12345 1 http://www.hosting.com/aggravated.jpg 100 50
moodtheme_setpic 12345 44 http://www.hosting.com/amused.jpg 100 50

What you do is upload all of the images to your directory or hosting site and then go into the admin code (see the crackified instructions for how and why). After you do the create mood theme thing - it'll kick back a number to you saying that your mood theme is number 98743 or whatever. Then you get into notepad and alter the admin code, changing that 12345 number to the number LJ gave you and also changing the hosting URL to the URL of where you've uploaded your images. After you've changed them all (and the edit/replace all option in notepad will change them all simultaneously) you go back into the admin console (again - see those crackified instructions) paste the entire contents of what you have in notepad and execute. When you next go into customize journal, you should see your mood theme as one of the options.

Does that make sense? The instructions on the link really do explain it much better than I do.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I think it makes sense. I'll poke at it when I get back from the vet's.

Thank you! :)

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Welcome!

[identity profile] hoodietime.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Soccer-mom!Dean! I lovelovelove that moment too. It was a throwaway moment, but it really said a lot about their relationship.

SIGH.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it great? It's right up there in my books with "The Usual Suspects" in terms of the boys' relationship.

So much love.

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit it, I'm a sucker for brothers. It's why I think I liked season 1 of Heroes (sadly, the rest of the seasons went straight into 'WTF ARE THE WRITERS EVEN SMOKING HERE???'), but these boys. Oh, I don't think I've ever loved a set of brothers as much as Sam and Dean. The only set that comes even somewhat close would be Ed & Al from FullMetal Alchemist. They have a very similar dynamic.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear you on Heroes. WTF? It doesn't help that I spend most of my time being confused when I watch that show. It might actually confuse me MORE than "Lost," and that's saying something!

Never seen FullMetal Alchemist.

*loves Sam'n'Dean*

I want Kripke to FIX THEM, ALREADY!

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think with Heroes that you can just stop at season 1. There's a few moments of charm in season 2, but considering that the entire season is practically AU for the show, there's just no point in bothering. It's impossible to make sense out of it and I gave up. I swear, the writers have no concept of continuity. And they keep introducing and disposing of characters. It's very hard to stay focused. Which is a pity because I adore Noah and would almost watch it just for him.

FMA is anime. You either watch anime (because it has a very, very different set of rules in regards to storytelling) or you don't. I never watched anime, but then my dear friend sent me Escaflowne and I was a goner. That and Serial Experiments Lain were my gateway drugs. It's a weird medium for a lot of people, but I dig it.

I swear, I want those boys fixed at the end of this season. Pleeeease, writers. Please.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't watch anime. I have Escaflowne sitting on a shelf (a friend lent it to me) but haven't watched it yet. I can't wrap my mind around the storytelling tropes: they get on my nerves.

Heroes is a lost cause, yeah. I do love Noah, though. Too bad, really.

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's what gets a lot of people. If it's not the exaggerated chibification of characters when you least expect it, it's the storytelling. It's just one of those mediums that, almost as a whole, either works for someone or doesn't. I think it's like country music or rap - sure, there will always be a song or two that you like (in the case of anime, it will almost certainly be a Miyazaki film), but for the most part people are pretty confident in saying that they don't enjoy it.

It is too bad. There was a lot of potential with Heroes, but it's just one giant, convoluted mess. I'm happy with my season 1, I think.

[identity profile] pkwench.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That said, even with the greater occurrence of some of the more annoying characters, Escaflowne the series tells a better story than Escaflowne the movie.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I didn't even know there was a movie. I have the series. I should get around to watching that, eventually.

[identity profile] debbiel66.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm re-watching all of Season 1 for my Big Bang story, and now I am going to have to go back and find that scene because I never noticed it before and I LIVE for that sort of thing.

It's crazy how much I love this show.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I love this show more than I have ever loved a TV show in my whole life. :)

[identity profile] callistosh65.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a lovely moment, isn't it? And it can't have been scripted. So it's either Jensen Ackles giving us one of those subtle Dean-isms he does so well ( think of the way he closes his eyes and leans into Mary's hand in WIAWSNB, which Kripke says was not scripted but which he loved Jensen for doing), or it's Jensen Ackles being Jensen Ackles because Jared is not looking and is in full explain-mode as Sam. And it's still a car horn. Either way, it's a beaut.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no words for how much I love that moment. :)

It's either a subtle Dean-ism (for which I love Jensen Ackles so very, very much), or maybe the director suggested it, but I'm guessing it wasn't scripted either.

*pets the boys*

I don't know enough about Jensen Ackles to know if it's something he'd do just because it's in his personality. It's kind of nice to think he would, though. *daydreams*

[personal profile] alexseanchai 2010-03-09 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It has to have been scripted, though. Or if not scripted, at least not impromptu. The car goes by onscreen.

(At least I think the car goes by onscreen.)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
My theory is that it's a directorial decision. :)

[identity profile] saschi212.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
One thing that always makes me a little sad is that I didn't watch the episodes in order. The first one I ever saw was In My Time of Dying, and the second one was Mystery Spot, so pretty much everything was already given away when I went back and watched previous episodes. I always wonder how I would have reacted if it had all been a surprise.

I LOVE watching with people who haven't seen it before! It's the best! It's like watching it for the first time all over again :) Way to spread the word!

And I LOVE that part in Nightmare. My best friend pointed it out to me and we both pretty much melted. I really want to go watch it right now :)

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I caught a couple of the episodes out of order way back in the day, but it was long enough ago that it didn't really affect my enjoyment of the show, and if memory serves they were stand-alone episodes ("Everybody Loves A Clown" and another, I think maybe "Born Under A Bad Sign"), so they didn't spoil too much for me, and I'd forgotten most of it anyway.

[identity profile] chiiyo86.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's awesome that you've managed to get your coworker hooked to the show! The last friend I watched SPN with kept making snarky comment - granted, she often does that when she watches something new... But not about my boys, damn it!

Hee, I didn't remember that moment in "Nightmare." I should rewatch it.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
So far I'm five for five with my conversion attempts: two coworkers (both of whom are irrevocably hooked) and three friends.

Next week I have my sights set on one last person who I think will get a kick out of the show.

I have been told that the fact that I'm REALLY enthusiastic about the show (and life in general) is very helpful in converting people to my cause. ;)

[identity profile] pinkphoenix1985.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh boys!

[identity profile] primrose-1.livejournal.com 2010-03-09 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I never noticed that! I need to go back and rewatch Nightmare!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes you do! It's one of my favourite episodes. \o/

[identity profile] primrose-1.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of mine, too. I see it frequently, but THAT'S a detail I've missed!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's a split-second moment, easy to overlook because they're both freaking out over Roger's death. :)

[identity profile] charis-kalos.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! The boys. It's ALL about big-brother!Dean and little-brother!Sam for me.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. It's all about the brother-brother thing, and that's why Seasons 4 & 5 are consistently breaking my heart, because my boys are so alone even when they're together and... :::weeps:::

Still waiting for Kripke to fix it.

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that moment. Oh, season one brothers!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I miss them SO much!

*pets the boys*

[identity profile] crackedeggie.livejournal.com 2010-03-10 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
THE WAY THE BOYS WERE TOWARDS EACH OTHER WAS SO GREAT, IT REALLY WAS MY MAIN REASON FOR WATCHING. THEIR DEVOTION TO THEIR FAMILY WAS JUST SO GREAT.
