I know what you mean but I know so many johns in my life that I can differentiate. Also even though they are very different characters for some reason they remind me of each other. Which might be exactly the reason to use a different name!! In any case I would adore some sheriff!daddy fic from you. What a great way to get back into writing.
His name is John, okay? He's been nameless for 3 seasons, that constitutes abandonment of all rights in first naming. Davis has abdicated his responsibility and rights on this matter. His name is JOHN. He is ours, he belongs to fandom, we call him what we want! =D
I think at this point the most disruptive thing Davis could do to fandom would be to name the Sheriff Steven or Bob or Darryl or something.
*CRINGE*
ETA: That said, it's totally cool to call him what you want to call him until canon actually DOES tell us otherwise. But I've seen it said in a lot of places that at this point, calling him anything other than John yanks people out of the story. I would say at this point he has a name; it's just not one Jeff Davis gave him.
And THAT said, I totally get your John Winchester issues. But they could totally hang out together and compare supernatural notes. Well, it would be more like John Winchester scaring the bejeezus out of John Stilinski. But it would still be a hell of a fun story. Especially since, if it happened in the past, then by the time Stiles gets around to telling his dad about werewolves, his dad would be all, "Oh, yeah, I know that. Let me fill you in on Vampires, tho..."
And all of THAT said, ZOMG, yay, write me some Teen Wolf!!!! =D

I'm slowly getting back into writing.
I will never use the name John for the Sheriff, though. It's inextricably linked with John Winchester in my head, and I just can't.
