*sadface*

I sometimes wonder what show people are watching.

Clearly, it's not the same one I am.

If you need me, I will be over here in my happy bubble that is free of ship wars, character-bashing, and show-bashing in general.

Hope you had a good time!

I can't say that I'm surprised by this. I know that there have been fans from S1 who have hated Sam with a passion that you wouldn't believe. It's just really sad that the fans who are 'loyal' are bashing him.

I actually feel numb about the story development because Show has yanked out all the loveliness of angst since there has been a very high level of angst since S4. I'm just waiting to see what the writers do with it-- I find that they start some storyline which is painful but interesting, and then somewhere it just belly-flops and dies :(

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I can see not really liking Season 1 Sam (I loved him, but I'm not blind to his faults), but hating him? Why?

I was hoping for a surcease from the angst. As you said, they've been pumping the angst in full-steam since Season 4, and I'm starting to get a little... not inured, because it hurts every time, but I dunno. I'd like a real break. An actual stretch of time during which the boys are okay.

I respectfully disagree. I think this season is wonderfully full of angst this season.

I think your comment got misplaced. To whom were you replying? :)

[identity profile] pinkphoenix1985.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Were you replying to my comment maybe? ;)

I didn't say that the season wasn't fulled of awesome delicious angst because it is! I was just commenting that for me--Show has been angst-packed at full speed since S4 and I've become numb a little to the angst and it doesn't effect me like it used to do in the past. I just would like a little time where the boys are good with each other, etc

Sweetie,

I think that Sam is heartbreaking right now. Everything that truly makes him Sam has been thrown away. The only way he makes it through his days is in trying to pretend to be the person he's supposed to be.

He's like someone who has had a traumatic brain injury effecting both his ability to feel pain and his ability to build any sense of context from his memories. He has them, he remembers specific people and happenings but he has no true frame of reference for it.

I'm very much bi-bro with slight Sam leanings. I love the show and am happy to follow where they lead us each week. I've never understood the concept of sticking around week after week if show just makes you miserable. If you're not happy with it use the magical power of your remote to turn it off.

Sometimes I think it might be a blessing in disguise that my time online is so limited most of the time. It makes me miss out on a lot of the wank.

*hugs*

*clings*

Exactly! I don't understand why some people view this as a reason to hate him.

[identity profile] mimblexwimble.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I hate when the show does a reasonable job of making me hopeful again and feeling for both brothers and then fandom starts in on bashing. For Pete's sake, we weren't supposed to hate Dean for the price he paid in hell! Why should we hate Sam? Their tragedy is that their sacrifices strip them of everything, so that they're paying the price even after it's supposedly over. Yeah, show's made this Sam vs. Dean for reasons unknown (probably the drama) but I wish people would see that as much as Sam is fucking up right now, he wouldn't be doing so if he could possibly help it. It's terrible because he can't help it and he's hurting he people he loves all over again and he doesn't deserve it! After fighting and succeeding with free will, to stripped of it and be essentially pushed down the same road he was on two season ago is so sad. All his work to get Dean to trust him again, wasted.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
God, it's so tragic I want to weep. A year's worth of work, two years' worth of pain and misunderstanding, flushed down the toilet.

The Show made it Sam vs Dean for the Epic Tragedy of it All™, I suspect. There is very little that hurts more than seeing family turn on each other (see the Greek tragedies for reference, among other things).

I'm just waiting for them to fix it.

[identity profile] jesseofthenorth.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
I never did get the whole character bashing , Sam girl Dean girl thing. I love the show warts and all. And after five plus years of watching those 2 flop around and act like confused jack asses I still just wanna make them soup and tell them to get more sleep.
Thank for journals like this were we can just escape the drama/insanity that are rife in so many grody little corners of fandom.
So. Thanks for that.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either! As evidenced my by coming to cry in this post at my beloved flist.

I want to make them soup and wrap them in a blanket and feed them tea and cookies until they feel better. :(

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't miss anything. Just a meta someone posted that basically said Sam has been evil and awful and mean all along and the latest episodes just prove it. Feh.

I feel lucky that I don't see it! There's no room for it in this show, because frankly we've been lucky to have it air for the last 5+years now. The nitpicking is unhealthy and divisive. We don't need it.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not. :(

[identity profile] authoressnebula.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And this is why I don't read meta. I get quite a few people on my f-list already that explode with "OMG I HATE SAM" and I go, "Um, WTF? Seriously?" Because there shouldn't be any hate. It should be Winchester love. I'm not particularly thrilled with show at the moment because hi, they're inciting this shit to start with, and I want my boys happy and healthy and together as opposed to getting the shit beat out of them by the other, but I still love show. I will love show until its dying day. Because in the end, it always gets better. And people that bash it can't see that. Which makes me want to do some bashing of my own.

In sum, can I come too? I'll bring fudge.

Yeah, I hate that I have to avoid certain corners of fandom too. :(

[identity profile] mtee.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you.. NOT reading them.. just hit delete. Don't do this to yourself. It's probably our last season, so immerse yourself in people who will analyze w/out bashing. Read the people who analyze colors and lighting (loved the latest meta on that... Sam has gone from red to blue in this season).

Tell us how you love it, how you have faith and how interesting this concept really is. We would love to read it.

And then tell your readers, no bashing allowed, no "I'm not watching this anymore (good go away!)"

[identity profile] tversan.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sad that people can't enjoy it for what it is, a wonderful show about two brothers.
I never hated Sam, or Dean and I really doubt the show's ever going to do something to make me.
Because I will always think it's awesome =P

[identity profile] tversan.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Btw, I thought this was a bit fitting. Maybe, at least. I saw it was discussed earlier about Sam vs Dean and all that went on in season four, and five.
I just bought the official companion season five (yay, was out too early in the bookstore) and there's an interview with Eric Kripke who says that the boys were finally ready to be together again after all the fighting, and then, I quote "Unfortunately, Sam dove into Hell just as they were ready to figure their crap out".

[identity profile] gulbrun.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been a huge fan of your fic for a while, so can I just say, I love that this is a place where people have rational conversation. I want to hold onto this post (and everyone in it) and never let go. I'm pretty much in tears of frustration at this point with fandom. The only reason I've been bothered by episodes this season is because I knew how people were going to react and all I could think was "OH BOY, HERE WE GO AGAIN."

I have a similar dynamic with my sibling (who might as well be Dean in another life) same age gap and everything, so I think I can understand Sam's perspective a little bit more in some cases. What I don't get is having them at odds with each other so much, and it breaks my heart to see it.

I can't stand the fact that some people only look at it from one perspective. Dean has been a jerk, said the wrong thing, been spiteful and trusted the word of others before his own brother. He has made mistakes too. He's so human and I love him for it.

I think they chose such a poignant way to end the episode, to show that both of them are in such a bad place right now. They've had so much crap thrown at them and they're both so broken. I kind of just want to play Coldplay's "Fix You" and hug the crap out of them right now. OH BOYS~ ;_______;

So yeah, everyone here is awesome and I'm going to keep hiding in this corner of fandom if you don't mind...

[identity profile] charis-kalos.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I fell in love with the Show and the boys a long time ago and they'd have to start literally and in RL killing puppies for me to give up on them now.

But I'm not even tempted because I am intrigued by where Show's going. And if the preview is right about what's wrong with Sam, then I'm going to be doing the "I told you so" dance. Because I picked that from 6.01. (I hope I've recorded that somewhere.)

My only fear is that it's so prominent in the preview that Show's messing with us and there's another explanation.

Maybe it was the years spent watching Buffy and Angel, but I'm down with the whole "I've done horrible things while less-than-human and need to seek redemption" plotline. Or: "I've lost an essential part of me that makes me human and need help finding it". Angel, Spike, Willow, Buffy - these were some of my favourite characters ever. If Sam's going down the same road ... cool!

[identity profile] roque-clasique.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I am always up for some rational critique of the Show, and I've done my fair share of yelling at the screen, but the ship wars and character bashing aren't something I like to be anywhere near. Same goes for any serious BITTERNESS launched at the Show -- although I understand it in a way -- I give it so much of my time and energy (WAY MORE THAN IS HEALTHY, GOOD LORD), and it hurts to think that the same level of care isn't being given, y'know, TO ME DIRECTLY. But they're just a cable show, and they do what they can, and at the end of the day it's still my absolute favorite show ever, so. *shrugs*

I don't even understand the ship wars. It's like, okay, if you don't like a certain pairing, don't freakin' read it! No issue!

IDK cherie.

[identity profile] hsifeng.livejournal.com 2010-11-01 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
While I have spent my fair share of time screaming at the TV screen this season (“Sammy, stop the vampire from eating your brother!” – I know you feel me…), I have to say this:

I finally got to see the new episode last night.

My pissy attitude about this season evaporated completely as soon as Dean started beating the crap out of Sam.

Now. I don’t like Dean beating on Sam as a rule. But in this case, it was exactly the catharsis I think the show needed.

Bravo SPN writers.

You got me, again.

*hugs* the writers and refreshes the cookies and candles on her altar to them…

…PS: Sorry Sera. I was a naughty acolyte and forgot to have faith…

Do you have some space for me in that bubble?
Haven't really read much abut the last episode yet - was at Asylum5 and offline this weekend - but reading your post makes me afraid to even start.
