Another thought that's not an insta-reaction

Behind a cut, because of spoilers.

Am I the only one who's having issues with Show's humour, lately?

Potty humour aside, I am getting increasingly squicked by the rape jokes. Is it me, or are they getting more... explicit? I mean, there was the "rode hard and put up wet" from earlier seasons, but this last episode just made me wince and CRINGE.

No, you weren't the only one, bb! XD

Wait, 'rode hard and put away wet' is a rape joke? I thought it was a horse metaphor. Or possibly a horse saddle metaphor.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's more of an anal sex joke. But yeah.

Ah. *educated*

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There have been A LOT of rape jokes this season, almost all of them made by, or at the expense of, Dean. IDK, it does squick me quite a bit.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I am WAY uncomfortable. WTF, Sera? She was the one who went ON and ON about the whole consent issue with Ruby. How does she not see this?

[identity profile] twirlycurls.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not the only one. This entire ep felt like an endless rape joke to me, with 12-year-old boner humor and some gay panic tossed in for spice. Ugh.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, not just me.

I mean, there was plenty of squee and flail, too, put I was really uncomfortable with all those jokes. COME ON.

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Not even close to being alone on this one. Totally squicked by the rape "humor".

[identity profile] scarletsherlock.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. I'm getting really tired of it. Not to mention Meg bound up naked and presumably sexually tortured on a table and shown to enjoy it. Yeah she's a demon, but seriously?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think she was enjoying it. I just assumed it was some weird form of demonic bravado.

Still, could have done without the whole scene, myself. It felt really gratuitous.

[identity profile] de-nugis.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not remotely alone. Some of it is disturbing -- the rape humor -- some of it is just leaden and puerile, like the potty humor and Cas's boner (though Cas's "has she done something wrong?" comment was also squicky in a beyond unfunny way).

And the naked with leather straps Meg scene was pretty inexcusable.

[identity profile] silverblaze85.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Me as well. I thought it was about horses. O.o

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering my grandmother used to say it, I'm guessing its roots are the horse thing. :-p. Or so I hope.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was very much in the same place- the episode had a lot going for it, technically speaking. But I found it really difficult to enjoy it considering the excessive, blatant misogyny. I mean, torture porn scene. And as far as I can tell, they were implying Meg was actually raped (with the knife). And then joking about raping her before killing her? How am I supposed to ignore that?

There are shows that deal with more misogyny than that, but they're structured in such a way that they're not rooting for it. It actually made me feel sick.

To say nothing of the whole meatsuit issue.

Drive-by confirmation: If a horse is ridden hard, to the point that sweat builds up in a lather on its skin, and is then put directly into a stable without receiving a rub-down to dry it off, it will get sick. So saying to someone "You look like you've been rode hard and put away wet" means "You look terrible."
[/Texas pedantry]

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Originally a horse thing, but lately I've only ever heard it in a sexual context...

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, dude, I missed the implication of the rape thing before killing Meg. I erred on the side of optimism and assumed it would be consensual. :(

Colour me even more unimpressed.

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just shocked. How did that get out of the writer's room without someone saying, "hey, let's step back and take another look at this"?

How did it pass the network?

I actually feel like writing the FCC, which is bizarre.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. The non-horse person here has mostly heard it in a sexual context. Good to know it has more innocent roots than that.

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It kind of makes me think she DOES read a lot of fanfic, because Dean being the victim of sexually uncomfortable/dubiously consensual/outright rapey situations has been a staple of fanfic for a long time. It's just not one of those fandom tropes I was ever hoping would become canon, you know?

[personal profile] ramblin_rosie 2010-12-04 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoot, from what I've read about the ep, it's not surprising you'd make that connection in that context. Glad I decided not to watch. :P

[identity profile] cordelia-gray.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I took that more as a reference to the kissing scene, which Meg seemed quite enthused about - I'm hoping that the writers just missed the rapey implications of that, rather than actually meaning them to be there. Yikes.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, apart from the sketchy humour, I really enjoyed the episode. It had a lot going for it. It would have been truly epic if not for the bad "jokes."

[identity profile] claudiapriscus.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe my brain just went there because of the obvious antagonism, or the implied torture-rape, or all the other rape jokes, but yeah. In the off chance it wasn't intentional, someone still should have said something.
