Another thought that's not an insta-reaction

Behind a cut, because of spoilers.

Am I the only one who's having issues with Show's humour, lately?

Potty humour aside, I am getting increasingly squicked by the rape jokes. Is it me, or are they getting more... explicit? I mean, there was the "rode hard and put up wet" from earlier seasons, but this last episode just made me wince and CRINGE.

No, you weren't the only one, bb! XD

Wait, 'rode hard and put away wet' is a rape joke? I thought it was a horse metaphor. Or possibly a horse saddle metaphor.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's more of an anal sex joke. But yeah.

There have been A LOT of rape jokes this season, almost all of them made by, or at the expense of, Dean. IDK, it does squick me quite a bit.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I am WAY uncomfortable. WTF, Sera? She was the one who went ON and ON about the whole consent issue with Ruby. How does she not see this?

[identity profile] twirlycurls.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely not the only one. This entire ep felt like an endless rape joke to me, with 12-year-old boner humor and some gay panic tossed in for spice. Ugh.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, not just me.

I mean, there was plenty of squee and flail, too, put I was really uncomfortable with all those jokes. COME ON.

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Not even close to being alone on this one. Totally squicked by the rape "humor".

[identity profile] scarletsherlock.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. I'm getting really tired of it. Not to mention Meg bound up naked and presumably sexually tortured on a table and shown to enjoy it. Yeah she's a demon, but seriously?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think she was enjoying it. I just assumed it was some weird form of demonic bravado.

Still, could have done without the whole scene, myself. It felt really gratuitous.

[identity profile] de-nugis.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not remotely alone. Some of it is disturbing -- the rape humor -- some of it is just leaden and puerile, like the potty humor and Cas's boner (though Cas's "has she done something wrong?" comment was also squicky in a beyond unfunny way).

And the naked with leather straps Meg scene was pretty inexcusable.

[identity profile] mimblexwimble.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't see the point in any of the jokes or scenes you mentioned. Take them out and the show could have had more plot progression, maybe. It's sad because the rest of the episode was very enjoyable and interesting. Using Castiel for comic relief is great - just do it without being nauseating. And enough rape stuff, unless it's a serious issue, especially from Dean. Just, no.

[identity profile] twirlycurls.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The potty humor scene and the Cas-boner stuff *sigh* felt so out of place to me that I wonder if they were penned by a completely different person than the people who wrote the rest of the episode. Perhaps someone who hadn't bothered to read the rest of the episode.

[identity profile] nbaeker.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
yep. the rape shower thing was one of the first things to be giffed and I was just boggled at it.

IDK, that just bugged me so bad. Come on Show, you're better than that.

[identity profile] twirlycurls.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That bothered me so much that I almost turned the ep off. Especially that they forced that awful line on Dean. Uggh.

[identity profile] debbiel66.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope it bothered me too. I will fast forward through scenes that bothered me while re-watching.

It all just seemed very . . . gratuitous. Like, there was no purpose to half of the episode except to "shock" you. (Dear SPN writers: disgust /= shock. Very little in this episode was either new or surprising.)

Honestly, I think that part of my brain shut down at the "rape shower" thing. It said "oh, this is going to be one of those episodes, and I don't wanna deal with it". I'm pretty sure I started doing something else while watching, which I very seldom do with SPN.

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE! Are they considering that most of their audience is made up of WOMEN, not fourteen year old boys??

[identity profile] lunasky3.livejournal.com 2010-12-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU

Not only is it poor taste, offensive and just sick... but it's also bad and lazy writing.

I'm offended as a woman AND a writer. Gah.

[identity profile] blacklid.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* I don't think it's nearly as bad as half the stuff people ask for in fan fiction. We really expect them to be oblivious?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
fanfiction =/= show, at least in my books. And I've never been a fan of that sort of thing anyway, especially not rape jokes. Rape jokes are never funny.

Nope, you're definitely not the only one. I was sitting there, thinking "What is it with the rape jokes lately? Since when has that topic become a running gag?"

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It really has become a sort of running gag. I am unimpressed.

[identity profile] belanna29.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That line was awkward to hear... IDK... atm i kinda think that some of Dean lines are out of place for a person of his age and experiences...

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I'm not sure what the writers are up to.

[identity profile] emmram.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody ever said Dean doesn't say really inappropriate things, but this was an exceptionally crass way to say that Crowley's exploiting them.

And I don't think it was meant as a joke.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*Dean* didn't mean it as a joke, but it felt as though the writers were playing it for the laughs, you know?

It was just weird from a guy who, only a few episodes ago, asked "How is that not rapey?" about a situation, thus expressing his obvious disapproval for the act.

It just... it was jarring, you know?

The sexual references were excessive, pointless, and not funny. They weren't saying anything new. It wasn't witty. I know SPN is about as refined as Hooters, but could they be a tiny bit clever about it?
Rape shower - OK. Dean's feeling violated. Sure.
Porn watching - why? Guys, that's just crude.
Cas/Meg - where the F did that come from?
Naked torture - where's the gore?? If there's no gore, how do we know it's not just demon sex?
In conclusion, the humor was jarring, risque, risky, and full of fail. If they're going to make rape jokes, they better have a solid payoff and flawless execution to compensate for the discomfort. These didn't.

[identity profile] alwaysenduphere.livejournal.com 2010-12-07 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh thank god, it's not just me.
