Another thought that's not an insta-reaction

Behind a cut, because of spoilers.

Am I the only one who's having issues with Show's humour, lately?

Potty humour aside, I am getting increasingly squicked by the rape jokes. Is it me, or are they getting more... explicit? I mean, there was the "rode hard and put up wet" from earlier seasons, but this last episode just made me wince and CRINGE.

*shrug* I don't think it's nearly as bad as half the stuff people ask for in fan fiction. We really expect them to be oblivious?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
fanfiction =/= show, at least in my books. And I've never been a fan of that sort of thing anyway, especially not rape jokes. Rape jokes are never funny.

OH MY GOD! pkwench, are you seeing this? THIS WAS YOUR PROMPT!
Oh. My bad.

I'm not lumping your stories in with the kink meme. I like your stuff. I'm just making a generalization the same way that a lot of people are doing in this thread. That's all.

You're equating Sam biting his wrist to rape jokes and misogynistic themes? How does that work?

I don't post anon and I don't debate with people who feel like they have to hide. Sorry.

Same anon adding, since you mentioned kink memes, that people ask for a lot of extremely explicit, technically illegal things on the meme that I'm pretty sure the prompters do not condone, beyond them being a kink they like to read. Should we expect or allow or not find it a little over the top if Supernatural were to use some of those kinks on the show? If I am uncomfortable with rape being used to fuel jokes, I'm the bad guy? The kink meme is a place where people can post their kinks and read stories they enjoy and avoid stories they don't. The kink meme fics come with warning, or tropes, or kinks, outlined in each heading. They clearly tell you what is going to show up in the story and if you don't want to read it, you are able to skip over it. There are no warnings on the show. There is no way to skip something that will make you uncomfortable by scrolling right past it.

I saw the post you made on your journal, and I wonder - how far does creative freedom go - did you see the pedophile guide on Amazon a while back? Should that be allowed in the name of creative freedom or should we be allowed to call that insensitive and disgusting? The kink meme is a relatively private forum that does not reach the public or large masses. There is very little chance that a child would come across it, or someone else impressionable. I don't know - someone else could explain this better than me. I found the jokes to be of very bad taste. There are limits. No one's rubbing fandom's face in anything.

(Apologies to ratherastory, I don't mean to sully your post.)

No worries. I encourage debate as long as it remains civil. :)

Actually, I was referring to a prompt [livejournal.com profile] pkwench left at the [livejournal.com profile] ohsam fic challenge, which had nothing to do with kink and was in fact a gen prompt. I think you may have got your wires crossed, there.

And I never took it that you were lumping my stories in with the kink meme. It'd be pretty difficult, given that 90% of them are gen, and most of the sex is relatively tame (the two stories with mild bloodplay aside, since they're about Sam's addiction and *do* bring a bit of kink into it).

In short, don't worry about it. :)

Thanks. While I'm sure my reply was offensive to those who are already easily offended, in your case it's nice to know that people still attempt to understand one another. :)

What I meant was that it seems counterintuitive to me that you first say that fanfiction <> show, and yet in another post, it is worthy of note when fanfiction = show. In a sense, it seems commonplace to think it's "cool" when any such prompt or fanfiction is allegedly "plagiarized" by the writers for an episode. I've heard leonidaslion's name mentioned many times in reference to plot lines for this season. It is remarkable. People get excited if something they wrote appears in canon.

However, that excitement obviously does not hold true for those who think they are turning out their character based erotica in a dark alley that no one will ever see or refer to. They get offended that their vice is now being reflected in the public eye.

While I understand the revulsion -- because talk like that is repulsive in a way and is meant to be -- I also see it as the very same thing that us gen-proficient writers have to diplomatically overlook daily in our fandom activities online anyway.

This show has broken new ground in closing the gap between fandom and canon in a way that no other show ever has before. If you're like me, that's one of the things that makes it so special. Therefore, I repeat my question: why is anyone surprised?

Why is our show, in continuing to successfully reflect all facets of fandom, suddenly considered so "intrusive"? Look at it from their side: how is writing porn about the characters they hold so dear not supposed to be considered intrusive to them? These people care about the characters just as much -- I dare say more -- than we do.

To those who write porn or OOC stories of any kind and are complaining, all I can say is that, well, if you sully the sandbox, it's sullied for everyone. If it wasn't poop before, why is it poop when the show does it?

We don't expect them to be oblivious, but we do expect them to be professional. I expect them to be better.

If I want rape, torture porn and kink I go read the meme. What I want from canon is completely different. I want a line between fandom and the show. Otherwise, why watch the show? Why not just be happy with the kink meme and fandom?

Yes, this. You've put it very nicely, anon.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-05 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Another anon - there's a hella difference between rape in fiction and rape jokes in fiction. I don't appreciate them finding my trauma oh-so-fucking-hilarious. But you keep on with your high horse.

Hola. Owner of this journal, here. I am all for debate, anon or otherwise, but you are treading veeeery close to ad hominem argumentation in that last sentence, there.

Please keep your tone civil, 'kay? :)

You're right, I'm very sorry. I should have waited to cool off before commenting anywhere.

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No worries. I don't think any of us here can claim never to have commented while angry (or drunk *cough*). :)
