LAS and LJ and stuff

Got my submission in for LAS just under the wire (since I have to leave in an hour). I wasn't especially inspired by the prompt, so I'm hoping that won't get me voted out of this round. Then again, even if my admittedly fragile writer's ego would take a blow, maybe it would be a blessing in disguise if I was voted out. I am clearly not mature enough to handle these "competitions" like a grown-up. :P

Anyway, I'm sure you've ALL heard/seen about LJ's new BFF policy with Facebook and Twitter. I would very much appreciate it if you'd all show me the courtesy of not reposting my content anywhere without my express permission. I'm sure you are all awesome and weren't planning on it, but this is a preemptive measure.

I don't have that many tags with "/" as a character, but I do hope LJ fixes that bug soon. It's a pain for the comms I'm in.

...but I do hope LJ fixes that bug soon...

If you haven't had a chance yet, drop by the feedback page and let LJ know just how happy you are with their newest feature/benefit (idiocy/FAIL).

There is a Feedback form here but you need to check the bottom option "Feedback" and then click Next and then fill in the form.

Not that they have responded to any of the pissed of comments about these "exciting news" aka the feature that nobody wants and everybody hates.

Prolly still too busy patting themselves for 'increasing site traffic'...

*insert appropriate finger gesture at LJ here*

Did someone have an oops, maybe we should find out how many people really hate it epiphany? Vote now, guys!

Totally adding this link to my collection...

Congrats on hitting your deadline honey; I suspect you are probably being hard on yourself with the criticism here, but I look forward to reading whatever you have put out there!

LOL

Thank you!

I think I did okay with the prompt. It's just not the best thing I've ever written.

Sent my feedback in to LJ, too. :)

I haven't heard. What BFF policy? WHAT IS HAPPENING?

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
LJ now has a "share" feature or whatever that allows you to cross-post your stuff AND other people's content on Facebook and Twitter. That includes LJ entries and comments, AND comments on f-locked entries. That means if someone quotes your f-locked entry and then cross-posts their comment, your f-locked content is thus broadcast to the internet at large.

FAIL.

Gah! This is the sort of thing that makes me feel all twitchy and paranoid and fills me with the compulsion to donate money to the EFF.

Crossposting friends-locked stuff is bad, and it's the kind of "you must share EVERYTHING" attitude that has me giving FB the evil eye.

But even if it were just public posts- it's the facebook part that really gets under my skin because of how much control has been stripped out of it and the way it ties to RL. Facebook doesn't recognize the need to divide our lives (and our friends/family/acquaintances/coworkers) into different spheres. It ignores all the contextual subtleties of human relationships. And now, by getting in bed with Facebook, so does LJ. Gah. I need LJ to be in a different sphere. Both as a space to indulge in some shameful, guilty pleasures but also as a place where I can comment on my life or whatever without worrying about how it'll play in peoria (so to speak).

Yes, THIS!

I have another LJ for real-life purposes. I DON'T under any circumstances want any of my fandom stuff to cross over into my RL.

I have WORK people who know about my other LJ and about my Facebook (although I haven't touched it since 2007 or so), and I have no desire for them to come and meddle in my fandom affairs.

This is my safe place, dammit!

This facebook, twitter thing is really disturbing. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs a demotion.

And I wouldn't worry about las. I'm really certain you won't be getting the boot anytime soon, no matter how uninspired you were by the prompt!

[identity profile] ratherastory.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not worried, per se. It's just that the competitive format is not good for my inner five-year-old. It brings out the "Waaaah! Nobody loves me!" reactions when I get rejected, eventually. ;)

And yes, the facebook/twitter/livejournal trifecta of doom is really disturbing.

Found this:

1. Go to your "Journal" menu, and select "Journal Style"
2. To the right, you'll see what theme you're using, with a link stating "Customize Your Theme". Click that link.
3. Scroll down a little ways, and you'll see that on the left side of your screen, you have multiple options to modify your theme. Click on the "Custom CSS" link, and it should load the options for doing Custom CSS.
4. From here, all you have to do is go to the "Custom Stylesheet", and put in that line.

.b-repost-item {display:none}

once you have it pasted in there, save changes.

Feel free to PASS THIS ON!!

ETA: This prevents the "repost to FB/Twitter" ticky boxes from being displayed when someone comments on one of your posts. It seems to work, UNLESS the person is viewing your page in their own journal style, in which case it might not work.

ETA2: Inserting the code below in your custom CSS box reportedly works for more kinds of journal styles, including custom ones (this courtesy of [info]xnguard):

.b-repost-item, FORM#qrform > TABLE[style="border: 1px solid black;"]:last-child TD[style="vertical-align: top; text-align: right;"]:first-child { display: none !important; }

Thank you! Someone already pointed me in the right direction yesterday, but I'm sure other people reading here will appreciate the info. :)
