faithburke's prompt Sam always knew he had a mother right next to him. He never realized she was dead. This story… isn't quite that, but I hope it comes close enough.

She held my hand the entire way and didn't let me freak out when I started over what felt like a million times. I'd like to thank her and yasminke for betaing the crap out of this thing, and turning it into a much better story in the process. I of course tweaked it after they were done, so all remaining mistakes are mine.
