ratherastory: (Writing is Hard!)
My shoulder recovered enough for me to start writing again in earnest, and so now I have spent the last two days working on a fic that's due for an exchange on the same day as the original Reverse Big Bang challenge. I'm hoping to have that done and out of the way by tonight, so that I can concentrate on the RBB all this weekend, and have something useful for my artist by Sunday night. The prompts I had were... umm... vague. Still, I think I've come up with something that will make my recipient happy while making me happy too. This is only the second time I've ever attempted writing Gabriel, and it's harder than I imagined. It's hard not writing him as a total caricature, especially since I'm attempting a more lighthearted fic. No, I swear, there's very little angst so far! Really!

This has been the weirdest, most random week ever. I don't even know where to start. There was overtime, and night shift, and stupid goddamn work politics that I want no part of and yet that keep landing in my lap because I'm trying to be freakin' Switzerland. Okay, so I'm a really snarky, opinionated Switzerland, but still. Being easy to talk to is a curse. Feh.

Anyway, I'm glad to be back in the writing saddle, so to speak. I feel bad that I haven't been able to write anything for the [livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth meme, but hopefully once I've done the RBB I'll be able to devote some time to it. I'm hoping that it'll still be going strong around Hallowe'en.

I keep telling myself that I should give myself a one-month hiatus from all writing obligations, but then I look at my calendar and realize I've already committed to stuff all the way into January. *sigh* Oh, fandom, the things I do for the love of you. ;)

Rats

Aug. 22nd, 2010 05:52 pm
ratherastory: (Always With The Scissors)
Title: Rats
Summary/Prompt: Not surprisingly, from [livejournal.com profile] pkwench at the [livejournal.com profile] hoodie_time Dean-focused h/c comment-fic meme. Dean and Sam investigate a haunting at an abandoned hospital and get separated. Dean's overcome by the ghost of a dead anesthesiologist and the spook slips him a paralytic that renders him fully unable to move, but leaves him fully conscious. He can't move, he can't yell for Sam, he can't even tell if he's still breathing. But he can feel and he can hear. And what he hears is the mad little scrabble of claws on old tile. Then they come, rats. Maybe just a dozen or so, but to him, unable to move in the darkness, it feels like hundreds of them, crawling over him, little tails sliding over his cheeks and his tongue, one of them right up in his face, the whiskers tickling him. And, maybe they start to gnaw a bit and he keeps trying to shout for Sam to move a finger or a hand to swat them away. But? He can't. Hope Sam gets there soon. Bet Dean does too.Original prompt and my reply can be found here.
Warnings/Spoilers: No spoilers. Swearing. RATS.
Wordcount: 1,183
Neurotic Author's Note #1: I just whipped this up in about half an hour. No beta, no revision, nothing. Just Dean getting chewed on by rats.
Neurotic Author's Note #2: I swore I would work on other things this weekend, but APPARENTLY I can't resist [livejournal.com profile] pkwench's prompts any better than before. So.

Everyone, do you know [livejournal.com profile] rainylemons? If you do, then good. If you don't, go read her fic RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.

So she and I were nattering about heart defects (don't ask, it would take too long), and then I nagged her for fic, and then she produced this soul-shattering, horrific little masterpiece.

The Guardian

Go read. Right now. I'll wait.

Apparently the way to survive six weeks without new episodes of Supernatural is to find comment-fic memes and write like there's no tomorrow!

\o/

The comment-fic meme at [livejournal.com profile] ohsam is still going. We have 23 stories, but LOTS and LOTS of prompts still going begging. Fangirls, to your keyboards! ;)

Speaking of which, the multi-fandom horror comment-fic meme over at [livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth is EATING MY BRAIN. I haven't even answered any of the zombie prompts.

I am rediscovering my love for horror, after not writing any of it since the Zombie Novel of '06. (Okay, there was an abortive attempt last November, but the less said about that the better)

In related news, [livejournal.com profile] werty30 has given me my new favourite phrase of the day, possibly even the week or the year, concerning my writing: "Restorative crucifixion schmoop." How awesome is that? Even if it was ironic, I love the wording. It's very reminiscent of the Show itself. *bounces*

In other, only slightly-related news, I am working night shift and I am kind of brain dead and I've been leaving nonsense comments in people's LJs. It's a little sad, but luckily also hilarious. You'll have to forgive all my blond moments, because my attention span is SHOT and it's a miracle I know what day it is, let alone remember to whom I'm speaking at any given time.

Deprivation

Mar. 6th, 2010 01:52 pm
ratherastory: (What You Cannot Dismiss)
I'm on a roll, apparently. Who knew comment-fic memes would make me so freaking prolific? I blame [livejournal.com profile] pkwench. This is another one from [livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth.

Title: Deprivation
Prompt: From a prompt by the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] pkwench: One of the boys is losing a sense at a time. A taste of blood, then nothing. A horrible sound, a terrible sight ... you get the idea. Eventually, all that remains is the sense of touch and they're soon praying that it's gone too. Original prompt and my answer can be found here.
Spoilers: Minor for Season 4.
Word Count: 2,347
Warnings: Not much to warn for, actually. Sam's in his own head a lot.
Disclaimer: Nihil me impune lacessit! Uh, I mean, they don't belong to me. *shifty eyes*
Neurotic Authorial Disclaimer: [livejournal.com profile] pkwench needs to stop prompting things. I'll never get anything else done for the rest of my life.
Neurotic Authorial Disclaimer #2: Unbeta'd and written during a slow period at work in the middle of the night. Broken grammar and miserable syntax are to be expected.
Neurotic Authorial Disclaimer #3: Apparently I'm on a serious let's-hurt-Sam kick. I may eventually get back to Dean, or maybe really mix things up and bring in another character entirely. Excitement abounds!

From the multi-fandom horror comment-fic meme going on over at [livejournal.com profile] sharp_teeth.

Title: Voi ch'entrate
Prompt: From a prompt by the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique: Dean, Sam, whoever -- horror retelling of the Labyrinth myth. (not the Henson movie *g*). Original prompt can be found here.
Spoilers: None. Maybe a couple of really vague spoilers for Seasons 4-5, but if you blink you'll miss 'em.
Word Count: 2,924
Warnings: Gore, violence, creepy shit, bad language. The usual.
Disclaimer: Apparently leather restraints can be chewed through. Who knew? Next time I'll invest in metal. Maybe chain link.
Neurotic Authorial Disclaimer: Uh, God. I don't even know how to explain this. I saw the prompt and I liked it?
Neurotic Authorial Disclaimer #2: This doesn't bear much resemblance to the classic myth, except that there's a labyrinth and a monster, and there were sort of 14 victims except I never bother mentioning that in the story, so, uh, yeah. It's not exactly a minotaur. Sorry.
Random Author's Note: Title is taken from "The Inferno."
